So, it's already a wide spread product in all entertainment stores, how long do you think it will take for Blu-Ray to reign, just like DVD reigned over VHS.

I give it around 3 - 4 years.

DVD offered clear and undeniable advantages over VHS. Like CD's vs. Cassettes.

The advantages of Blu-ray are less overwhelming. Same reason digital tv hasn't taken off. There's no need and no demand.

People don't see it as worth the investment. It still has to come down substantially in price.

VHS to DVD was a HUGE shift... way better quality, no degradation over time, smaller, surround sound

DVD to Blu-ray is unremarkable. The only advantage is a better picture.

Before DVDs came in, entertainment was limited to the lounge room. Now, everyone watches DVDs in the car, on their laptops, on portable players... Its going to be much much harder to get people to switch when they have to throw out 4 or 5 devices instead of 1

The one thing that could be good is if they had a deal where you buy the bluray and get the DVD of the same thing free - then I would actually buy them

And better audio.

Once you see/hear Blu Ray, you can't go back. 1080p is pretty amazing.

I don't think it will entirely take over, i think movies will be on a mainly download basis, like music is now
Absolutely spot on I think.

Blu-ray will never take over from DVD in the same fashion as DVD took over from VCR as the real future in movies lies in downloads. There are far less overheads for the distributor and it is much more convenient for customers. Which means pricing should be a fraction of what it is now. I will throw in the caveat that our internet needs to reach first-world standards before this is reality, though, so movies can be downloaded relatively quickly however.

Probably won't come in until most people have 1080p TV's and blu ray players/burners/discs come down significantly in price to match the cost of DVD. That may take a while.

Retailers/suppliers/developers are still milking all the profits they are getting from DVD's/DVD players and TV's which cant maximize the use of blueray players so i would say 7-10 years.

With HD-DVD, Blu-Ray's main competitor, out of the picture I reckon it'll just be a matter of waiting for the prices of the Blu-Ray players and the disks themselves to drop to competitive levels before it "takes over" and becomes standard until the next big thing shows up.:)
