Some of the most common boonie hats are the desert, woodland, and multicam versions of the MARPAT camouflage pattern. They are also available in a variety of other styles, including the UCP, Woodland, and three-color desert versions. Some are also available with UV protection.

The hats have metal vents to help keep heat from accumulating at the top of the person's head. The wearer's rank is usually pinned to the front of the boonie hat.

Boonie hats also tend to replace the standard patrol cap in hot weather locations. The design of the hat has changed very little since the early days.
