Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

You'll be a 30 year old graduate and you're calling other people a failure. :biglaugh:

Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

I used to be pretty arrogant too. You'll learn, though judging from your signature, you gave up on law so I don't know why you're here slinging pooh.

Why do people choose to do Law?

In fairness it isn't true for the majority of graduates in any industry apart from some engineering roles. As other people have said though, more than any other industry, the expectations and hours far exceed what you would expect in comparable professions like accounting, and salaries are...

Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

There was a spike here in Canberra because half of the Australian Government Solicitor quit. They were merged in to the Attorney General's Department, so are now on the AGD enterprise agreement. 20% bonus for paralegals, 20% pay cut for solicitors, no more bonuses and no change in hours or...

Why do people choose to do Law?

I wanted to do something vocational that'd give me the ability to work for myself after doing a few years corporate. I thought I was being really practical, but hey, 18 year olds are allowed to be naive.

Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

I'm an accountant now and I'm actually shocked, in spite of its similarities to law, how much better everything about the profession is.

Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

I've worked as a solicitor. I've been in legal recruitment. I've been in the APS. Of the people I know from law school, the majority are either back studying or doing something else, even people who managed to get a start in the profession. Of the people who are still in the profession, heaps...

    LLM at ANU or USYD?

The entire law faculty has a massive hate boner for DFAT; so if by 'work closely' with government you mean slagging DFAT's policy positions off in class continuously, sure. Peter Bailey was a former public servant and established the Human Rights Commission, but he's retired now. The coursework...

Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

ITT people with industry experience say law is shit. Later year students disagree.

What are the best books on law?

Fuck books, university has nothing to do with practice either. Hit up the parents of your friends to see if you can get some work experience.

Doing law if you're not sure about it?

Law is expensive. At the very least you're wasting $ on uni fees and opportunity cost from when you could have been working rather than studying. Do what you think you'll enjoy, don't worry about 'wasting' your UAI.

Finance/commerce (accounting) or Law/commerce (accounting), which has more 'scope'?

Re: Finance/commerce (accounting) or Law/commerce (accounting), which has more 'scope Can you take a double accounting/finance major in a BCom with law? Most universities don't have a separate finance bachelors. Edit: @ UNSW, yes. Probably at other unis too.

Are there no jobs for lawyers

Dude, seriously, what don't you get about this? You don't 'do' international law. You do a law degree and possibly take two or more international law related electives in your fourth and fifth year.
