It would be more usual to rewrite LHS into RHS for this problem, though t formulae would also work. You could even use calculus, if you really wanted to.

Or... by calculus:


The LHS can also be re-written as before differentiating.

Also, the non-calculus approach is definitely easier in this case!

(Especially if I went more carefully through the problems raised by discontinuities...)
