No, you're right (unless im a fool too). I assumed you were calculating the area of one side of the quadrilateral.

You will come to realise Fawun that a math question can be tackled in countless of ways, and answered correctly. It's just about finding the most efficient way. :) Personally I didn't use pythag but it could? work. Just briefly looking at the question I'm going to say that its invalid, but meh...

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon First line you made a typo. Second line is wrong. It is given that they are parallel, nothing more. Third is fine.

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon Yeah I just do the general shape and then make one point and label it (1,2) or something like that. So the markers know that it belongs to the graph 2/x. I guess you could just write 2/x at the end of the line.

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon He means 2/x by itself. And Fawun, I do that for every graph. Rough sketch and then put important points in.

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon x^2 -8x +25 (x-4)^2 + 9 Therefore 4 is the axis of symmetry. Then you sub in x = 4 and you get the vertex to be (4,9).

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon Okay so x^2 + x + 2 = 0. You factorised this into (x+2)(x-1) = 0 This part is already wrong (it is the factorisation of x^2 + x - 2, which is not the question) I think this is what people have been trying to say?

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon Ah, minimum. Wasn't reading properly (sleep deprivation getting to me haha). In that case you do -b/2a for axis of symmetry and sub in for vertex. :) Edit: Fail whale, didn't even read it had to be done by completing the square. *Scroll down for new answer
