So in other words they are essentially the same (that is, they are a private network operated over the internet), except that a VPN is only accessible by employees of the company, whereas an Extranet can be accessed by other companies as well?

Dude...what the hell do you expect? it's a fucking 3 year old laptop. But yeah, the speed it gives in Powerstrip is about 1009MHz (just over 1Ghz) But this can't be right, esp for the GPU core speed. The CPU is good (2.66GHz) but let down by its 400MHz FSB XD
