Reason to why we enjoyed first year computing so much

heh, I kind of agreed with Pace_T. But I remember him saying that he saw the purpose of lectures as inspiring us to learn. I like this, since I prefer independent learning, and I found his lectures very motivating and insightful.

    Useful Apps on CSE Comp?

cwd? I think you mean pwd (print working directory). Probably most useful program for me would be vi.

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

Also, 2041 is one of the bludgiest courses. Although, since 2011 is a prereq for most 3rd yr courses, wouldn't that be the better choice?

    general UNSW chit-chat

But as soon as you go to take the stairs, the lift comes. What's wrong with the people who catch the lift to a consecutive floor (e.g. level 2 to 3)? Surely it's much quicker to take the single flight of stairs instead of waiting several minutes to get into a packed lift.

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

Hmm, interesting. According to the handbook/myUNSW, it seems Richard is the "instructor" for both 1921/2011 *and* 3441 (crypto). Is he doing both? Or otherwise - which one of us is going to miss out? :p

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

I think what it means is, 1921 is now done in place of 1021, but at the same time, they decided to change the content so that data structures is taught in first yr instead of second. In other words, the content of 2011 is now done in 1021 (but in seemingly less depth). 1921 seems to be kind of...

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

Oh well, I suppose you could say it serves me right for not going to lectures, but 1021 was *extremely* boring. Surely, something this important deserves to be announced more "clearly" (assuming it was announced in 1021 in the first place). Also, did they mention anything about the mess you'd be...

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

The reason I didn't choose it this session is, as I mentioned is *because it didn't fit in my timetable*. Also, the first I heard about 2011 not running next session was when someone pointed it out to me on the 2011 page (during the middle of this session). The handbook said it was still...

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

Hmm. I just left 2011 till s2, since it didn't fit into my timetable s1. Now 2011 has been axed, I'm not sure what to do. If I don't do 2011/1921 this session, it seems I would not be able to do 3rd yr computing subjects till s2 07 (since 2911 only runs from s1 07). Also, as Peggy (?)...

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

You guys complain about 2711/2011 so much, and then when we figure out we can't do it, you say its great! Anybody know if we'll still be using Java next session?

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

Hm, well it does say on the 1921 stop press: and it is a Richard-style page. I suppose it's good if we get Richard, but I don't really want to be lumped in with all the first yrs. :p The course description from the handbook looks quite different from 1721 (since C is covered in 1911 now, I...

    math1131 help meeeeee

BTW, the 1131/1141 algebra class test isn't *this* week, is it? I have last yr's notes, and they say it is next week, but just making sure.

    Maple!!!

Haha, I just did the maple assignment using the console maple. It was great, except for the fact that the graphs weren't that great, so I had to just take an educated guess at the graph question. Apart from that, it is actually a lot simpler to use, and quicker as well.

    COMP2011/2711 Students Represent!

I was planning to do 2011 next session, since 2011/2711 didn't fit in my timetable this session. Now I find out that its not going to be offered anymore... Hope the replacement subject is better, and I hope I haven't missed anything, since it seems they do data structures and algorithms in...

    SIGMA Remote Access

To connect to math from inside UNSW, try entering: ssh -X zxxxxxxx@sigma.maths.unsw.edu.au from a *nix box (or Cygwin on a Windows box). X Windows would probably have to be installed as well. From outside of UNSW, the only way I know of is to first 'ssh -X' to CSE (you need a CSE account), and...
