Dropped SDD and Math advanced because I absolutely despise them and do not see me performing well in the future. Do you think that I will be able to get a 93+ atar with this combo? I’m wanting to do a double degree in UNSW economics/design (not sure what I specifically am gonna do for eco or design yet but most likely for eco not something too math heavy)

yipee yes i really want to get the highest atar possible a 98 would be amazing. like im ready to push hard and have a good balanced year 12, at the moment i got 3 weeks till year 12 im just taking it slowly because I need to recover from the exam block pressure but right now im just going over the syllabus for year 12 and seeing whihc Year 11 content overlaps for ecos, business and ipt and making sure ive mastered them, english advanced my teachers been giving me practice modified HSC questions to do and for ext 1 im just reading the prescribed text. then for math standard im just doing everything from year 11 and hope to get ahead a bit.

Any other advice for what I should do?

Like if I were to do Math Advanced or Standard either way im gonna be working hard im not gonna be slacking off coz i care for my future yk? I just thought I would do standard as it means that I can stay caught up a bit better as I kept falling behind in 5.3/prelim adv. and i really want to do ext 2 english so asking a lot of teachers from school they said for me to just do Standard and try out ext 2 english

Get UNSW Early entry (if your school is eligible) and it's extremely low diff given you put in some sense of effort. I would aim for 96+ ideally though just so even if external factors before the HSC do slow you down (happened to me i.e COVID/sickness), you'll be more than able to get above your desired ATAR.

Just keep in mind that UNSW courses tend to expect a lot more from you than the usual uni in terms of technicality, I've seen many students get 50-60 who were decent students in uni because they could not keep up with the pace (Ps get degrees). Do know that economics does require you to take some form of quantitative subject/introductory maths to get you at that bench level however its very easy to avoid the higher maths such as stats for econometrics etc. by simply choosing the least quantitative major in your eco/business degree.

I doubt you can avoid stats in eco however I am sure you do not need to become a mathematician necessarily to do good. Someone doing eco can give more optimal advice however but I have seen the degree before so there's my 2 cents. You can't escape introductory calculus/stats though, soz, you'll most likely need to know some basic differentiation/integration for some topics in microecon since I've seen the course notes but if you're motivated it shouldn't be that hard. Route learning the maths should be more than fine and some of my eco friends have done that and its been fine for them.

Yeah I 100% understand that I won’t be able to escape math and after the HSC I’ll make sure to catch up I guess. Also I thought UNSW doesn’t do early entry?

.

Try looking into these two schemes for unsw early entry

its definitely achievable if you try your best :))) just make sure to study at least 1 hour everyday during yr12 (glossary terms, syllabus, content, hw, whatever) make sure you don't fall behind and if you can in the summer holidays or now, you should try do the whole hsc syllabus for 1-2 subjects you struggle with, to make your life easier. Make sure to do every syllabus dot point, and always handwrite your notes (if you do this in the holidays I promise you'll save so much time) The subjects I recommend for you to study would be ipt, business and math. IPT is an easier subject you just need to know the terminology, how to draw diagrams and how to incorporate that into your case studies etc. Business which I have no idea about, probably has a lot of glossary terms, memorisation, and case studies so pretty similar to that. Math is really conceptual, if you don't understand one concept you most likely wont understand the topic, so it's good to know the material beforehand. It seems you're good at eco and English so you will do great as long as u aim high!!

gl with first year economics uni math ;)
I had a look about the Commerce Integrated First Year Courses and the math doesn't seem that bad. idk what you meant. like you know that im just doing standard to alleviate some hsc pressure but then after that if I do need some more advanced math I can learn that after school? like there's more to the hsc right

this is the document that talks abt what is in that first year course

idk this is all very confuzzling

just some context I struggled with mental health In year 10 and had a very rough year so far struggling with depression but managed to do well in my subjects except advanced math and my mental health has been improving gradually after getting the necessary help (yay) however because of these past things that have happened i've ultimately made gaps in my knowledge of 5.3 content and year 11 content meaning that after talking to my teachers it may be much more efficient for me to do standard as there wont be as much heavy content to catch up, and then later on if needed for my course I can learn the necessary math but at least for me right now my goal is to get the required atar to get in (93) and hopefully higher.

Like I genuinely enjoy math when I understand it but because of this lack of a strong foundation In my earlier years, it made it very tedious for me in year 11 and demotivated me kinda, like I truly want to be a good hard working student its just that this just happened I guess

ok so I had a meeting with the head of math and my housemaster he said for me to go ahead with standard and that its actually good if I am able to do well in it.

he also said that he did an economics degree in UNSW and the first year economics is nothing that u do in advanced math.

happy days

They do technically have early entry through a program called gateway, however for that you need to either attend a gateway school or live in a poor/low socioeconomic status area. The other program is called portfolio entry which doesn't grant you entry, it only lowers the ATAR for the course (for example computer science needs a 90 ATAR but if you are able to get portfolio entry they might lower it to 80 for you).
