So my teacher gave us a limited list of related texts we HAVE to choose from in regards to belonging. I was thinking of doing the non-fiction book, 'True blue? On being Australian'. It's an anthology of short stories, articles, texts and images etc. Now if I were to refer to the book in an exam, how many items do I have to talk about? Or is one article/text from the anthology enough? Knowing my teacher, she'd be going on about how we need to refer to 3-5 texts from the anthology to produce a quality response. Isn't that a fair bit too much? I mean, we might have to discuss another related text whether it being my chosen film or novel for all i know (say if the question asked to discuss two related texts). It also doesn't help that my prescribed text is Immigrant Chronicles. This might be a bit confusing but i'm very lost as well. I'm just annoyed at the fact that at my school we don't get any freedom in choosing our own related texts.

One article or text is enough.

Your teacher is an absolute moron if she's limiting the related texts you have to choose from by giving you a list. Have you tried complaining to the Head Teacher?

Sadly, she is the head teacher. She says that by giving us a list, it'd be easier for us to choose related texts with complex ideas. She says she doesn't trust us if we were to research our own texts. We're talking about a list that has Mean Girls here. Seriously?

Ask her - if you're in the HSC, markers will get papers in bundles from the same school. So let's say Marker #56 gets your school's papers. He goes through them, and realises that out of the 100 students at your school, 70 have the same related text. What does that say about your school?

It's stupid....really.

But if you -must- [which is bad luck =\], try choosing novels, or films. If you want to use that anthology, try not to choose a poem (as Skryznecki's stuff is poetry, you'd want to choose a different text type).

Good luck - if you need anymore help, just ask.
