I am back, because what...????
how does it work. I'm the only child, so my parents and I have been arguing on this for the past 2 hours because basically everyone in my family is researching different information on the same topic. So I have a few questions.

do you start applying to university in year 11 or year 12? and when??
UAC is only for NSW universities. what about others like monash and queensland? how do you apply to those?
what about US universities?
how does early entry work? what does it test and do you have to apply to be tested?

i have more, but I'm just really confused rn

You apply halfway through year 12. Your school will keep you updated on application dates, but you can also find them here (you'll get a new one):

If you want to apply to other states, their application centres have almost identical dates to UAC (with the exception of this year due to corona).
To apply to universities in Queensland, use QTAC: https://www.qtac.edu.au
To apply to universities in South Australia, use SATAC: https://www.satac.edu.au
To apply to universities in Western Australia, use TISC: https://www.tisc.edu.au/static/home.tisc
To apply to universities in Victoria, use VTAC: https://vtac.edu.au
To apply to the University of Tasmania, you have to apply directly on their website.

Don’t worry about it because your school will tell you all about and give you application files in Year 12. Early entry can use your Year 11 results, or simply judge you based on your early entry application alone

what about US universities?
Very different to Australia. US universities don't really have a direct equivalent of the UAC or even the ATAR/HSC, so the process is nowhere near as standardised. I would disregard any material about US college applications unless you are actually planning on applying for one.

You would generally have to sit the SAT or ACT standardised tests, but these only form part of the application process. You apply directly to the university (paying a fee for each one) and would likely have to write a number of essays. Generally admission is based on a combination of school results + SAT/ACT + extracurriculars + the essay(s), but it varies widely between universities.
