So I've put my first preference on UAC to be Mining Engineering at UoW and I was just wondering if this means that I am locked into Mining or whether I can switch at a later date if I don't feel Mining Engineering isn't for me.

I put mining as a first preference for no real reason. I almost literally have no idea which branch of Engineering I want to do, I think I applied for most of them, but one has to come first :p

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I'm not in Engineering, but checking out the handbook Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering) - 2010 Course Handbook @ UOW leads me to believe that it may be difficult changing in later years, just because of the number of specialised subjects. I doubt they'd stop you if you really wanted to though.

I'm not sure if you can still change, but maybe you'd like to put Flexible Entry in as your first preference; http://www.uow.edu.au/handbook/yr2010/ug/eng/H10000073.html

UoW handbook said:
The Flexible entry program has core subjects in common with Civil, Mining, Environmental, Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronics Engineering programs. This option is for students who would like to explore various engineering disciplines before selecting a major area of study.

After completion of the first year subjects, shown below, students then transfer into their chosen discipline of engineering.

Hopefully someone who has more idea than me can reply :)

Ok so after your first year it will be easy to change to virtually anything. All first year subjects are common across all engineering disciplines

After your second year it will not be too hard to change to enviro or civil, but will add an entire year if you went across to mechanical/mechatronic/materials. It would only add about 2-3 subjects if you went to civil but these could just count as electives...

However....once you start mining you probably wont want to stop. Id suggest doing a double with civil. That way once the mining boom crashes you can still get a job, however, you enjoy the good graduate salary that comes with the mining industry, and you get to come along to BLOW ME Keg races, AGMs and every other social event held

Cheers

Cheers for the info, Dawso. Appreciate it.

Yeah, I was looking on the UoW website this morning and noticed that the first year in the course outline things are extremely similar. For all branches of engineering.

While I was there I also noticed those double major things. I think I will do one, I initially thought Mining/Civil... but then I thought Mining/Environmental might be the way to go with all this environmental sustainability trash :p

Haha.
