No not chem questions in the bio marathon. I meant post a bio question
I don't do it, but I'm sure Hiva probably already has, (just a guess though). This thread seems extremely useful, can we do one for chemistry?
a) Antibiotics are needed in assisting the body's anti-bodies in finding bacteria via antigens that bind to the foreign bacteria.
I miss doing Chemistry!!
Yep, you definitely know your stuff - You actually reminded me about all that!Sample Answers
a) A bacterium maintains its shape and protects itself from the external environment by having a cell wall. Some antibiotics inhibit the synthesis of a protein essential for the cell wall construction; this action weakens the cell wall and eventually results in cell lysis, killing the bacterial cell.
b) A virus is non-cellular and hence has no cellular structures or metabolic activities that an antibiotic can interfere with. For example, an antibiotic which prevents the production of an essential cell wall protein does not affect a virus as it has no cell wall.
I'm sorry, I have no idea. I'll just wait for a proper answer tomorrow from someone else.
Ultraviolet radiation is a type of non-ionising, electromagnetic radiation. Two types: UVA and UVB. UVA generates reactive free radicals that oxidises DNA bases which can lead to incorrect base pairing. UVB causes 2 pyrimidine bases on the same strands to link together and form a ‘dimer’. This causes a structural kink in DNA and also prevents replication
