Brogden resigns after race slur row

NSW Opposition Leader John Brogden has resigned as leader of the Liberal Party after revelations he labelled Bob Carr's Malaysian-born wife a "mail-order bride" and pinched the bottom of a female journalist at a function last month.

Announcing his retirement at a press conference this morning, he said: "I acted dishonourably and now is the time to act honourably".

Mr Brogden said he would stay on as Member for Pittwater.

He offered an unreserved apology to Helena Carr and former premier, Bob Carr, for the "silly joke for which I can only but apologise and do so sincerely". [...]

O'Farrell or Debnam would be the frontrunners at this stage (Tink is an outsider)...but odd things often occur, so who knows..

We got Debnam coming to our club meeting on Wednesday :D

EDIT: That's presuming he doesn't cancel in order to do whatever they have to do when electing a leader.

There is a scheduled Garden party funtion for the Croydon YL's on the 18th, to meet with 'Leader John Brogden'. I must make enquiries to find out as to whether or not this will continue either:
a) with the new leader or
b) with Brogden as a mark of respect...

It will be interesting to find out...

Will the Liberals be able to muster a good enough leader by the election?

I reckon O'Farrell is good enough, but he'll have to work extremely hard to become known to the people of NSW, and in the right way.

It is a feasable possibilty. Iemma has only been in the position for around a month or so, which ultimately means that the leaders now start on level ground. It will depend on the ability of O'Farrell or Debnam to promote themselves as leadership material and the Liberal party as a viable alternative.

I also believe that whoever it may be, will be able to take on board the myriad of criticisms of Brogden and utilise them in forming their own profile. Inevitably, the state executive need to sit down and develop realistic, coherent and not overly zealous policies that do contain elements of foresight. It may provide them with the breath of fresh air that has been needed for a while...

More likely
c) it will be cancelled or
d) with some other senior party person instead of the new leader.

I think that Brogden did the only thing that he could have done, in this situation.
