It's basically the title..
At my school, there's only one economics teacher (other teachers can take it but they don't have any classes for year 11) and he's awful; he doesn't stick to the NESA points and rambles on about useless information we won't be tested on and difficult questions he doesn't explain for homework.. saying all these keywords and theories only three or four boys know. (he talks the whole lesson about IRRELEVANT things in economics) and I'm beginning to hate the subject. I asked him to explain the work he assigned for homework, difficult paragraph long questions I didn't understand, and he replies with "that's why I assigned it" and proceeded to ignore me asking for help. So frustrating -_-. He only really answers questions from the boys at the front that are obsessed with money & finance.. ignoring everyone else. Particularly ignoring the girls... as there are only four of us in the class...

How do I stay on top of content I don't understand? Are there any good economics YouTubers? Does anyone have any experience with crappy teachers and how they dealt with them? Thank you so much

Honestly there's not much you can do about your teacher, if I were you I would go over the Riley/Dixon textbook and make notes, supplemented with statistics (from Trading Economics) and information from RBA explainers (Explainers | Education | RBA). If you are struggling to understand something, Alex Symonds has some good HSC economics videos that you could watch, or you could ask questions on this website :)

haha this was me during prelim eco
Except we had this really nice teacher but she just couldn't teach at all

Im not gonna lie, i didn't study eco at all at prelims bcuz i thought i was going to drop it but i still wanted to pass
u should
- download other peoples prelim notes
- use a textbook like atar notes or something that you can self learn off
(dont use the school textbooks unless u wanna read a giant book which is a waste of time)
- use something like atomi
Looking back, prelim eco wasn't too difficult to self teach so u got this

From the looks of it, you don't seem to like eco in the first place... 1. If students get more attention in the front of the class, why not do the same as the kids that are 'obsessed with money'? 2. Not all qns will be easy in the hsc, so you cant rlly complain if you get assigned stuff like that... Even if hw is not explained clearly, you need to put in effort too to consider components he explained and see how it relates to qn at hand. 3. If keywords and theories are unfamiliar to you, then why not just learn them? All I'm saying here is that not all teaching is about reading a dot point out of the syllabus and writting notes off a decade old powerpoint presentation. Teachers are often going to infer things through syllabi points and relate these to real life. This is what makes it interesting. If you don't enjoy this type of content, and if there are no other teachers, it probably easier if you drop for another subejct.
lol what.

yes, teachers do have the liberty to relate things to real life, but teachers like the one OP described do exist and they talk about things largely irrelevant / out of the scope of the syllabus to the entire class at the expense of getting through the course in sufficient detail (from personal experience).
the HSC is pretty dense, it's hard enough to cover the whole syllabus let alone relate it to things in real life, and doing that at the expense of students who don't understand the concepts within the syllabus is not the student's fault.

furthermore i would expect that when a student is learning content, they are able to ask clarifying questions, particularly with tricky questions. while you do have to take initiative to understand concepts, teachers are also there to help students understand (just like you said yourself, "not all teaching is about reading a dot point out of the syllabus and writting notes off a decade old powerpoint presentation").

both parties (student & teacher) have to cooperate to elicit understanding in a classroom setting. it sure sounds like the teacher is not being helpful here. it is possible to do almost everything in the learning process out of a classroom setting, but it does take longer...

i wouldnt use atomi as a way to get better at eco, but definitely a good resource for just starting new topics etc. since it has good visuals. I remember watching a vid about tariffs/quotas and it was pre good looking.

Thank you so much for your advice, I'll definitely check this out now. I know there's a bunch of atar notes textbooks at the school library, so hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on it..
I haven't heard of atomi but it sounds interesting! Thank you so so so much.

You perfectly summed up my teacher...
Thank you so much, I 100% agree with you. I didn't want to reply to Pethmin because it just felt like a personal attack considering they were telling me to drop the subject 😭
