Ok so from some of the things of read on here I have come to the understanding that ranks are very important as say for example the student coming 1st gets 92 in an HSC exam and the student coming 2nd gets 95, the student who is coming 1st will then get the 95 mark.

Is this right and how it works? Or if not can someone please explain it to me?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

The student coming first will receive an internal mark of 95 and external mark of 92 = HSC mark of 94
The student coming second will receive an internal mark of 92 and external mark of 95 = HSC mark of 94

Obviously, it's a lot more complicated since there's so many students.

It Is a stupid system rankings shouldnt matter
You would rather have a whole years work based on one test, only to find that didn't do as well as you'd have liked and stuff your ATAR up completely?

Assessments in each school are not the same in difficulty. If it was based on internal marks, it would be an extremely unfair system.

So do the marks which you have obtained throughout the year from assessments really matter or is it just the rank which you receive when those marks are combined matter? I'm unsure as you hear different things from different people.

The ranks are most important, getting ranked first obviously. If you aren't coming first however, you need to have the gaps between your assessment mark and the people ranked above you as close as possible.
