Okay so i need help, I'm one of those people that can't stop going to the friidge during exam-time, chucking late nighters doing assignments etc i'm not even hungry yet I'll go and grab something to nibble on and since it's about that time of the semester again.

Besides the (go stock up on fruit/veggies approach) because i've done it im just not one of those carrot snackers (raw carrots make me gag btw) and basically i just want to get rid of the nibbling habit i tend to develop during exam time

I've lost about 9-10kgs and still have about 12kgs to go but i'm scared that come exam time i'll gain it all back again :( which'll ruin everything! :bomb:

So any help on substitutes, what else to do, will power, motivation, pep talks or anything will be very much appreciated!

*btw asy can you change this title to healthy approach to studying?* edited

Re: Instead of eating: Healthy approach to eating!

i think a lot of the time it's habit, so it's hard to break. what about making your room a food free zone? then if you want to eat, you'll have to go to the kitchen and stand there to eat it. also i find that i nibble less if i eat a lot at dinner. when i'm full, thinking about food makes me feel sick, so then i don't nibble. finally, you have to forget about food. when i'm bored, my mind will wander, to the fridge. if i don't have time to be bored, like 5 hours work to do in the space of 2 hours, i don't get bored so i don't think of food.

I find by giving myself other things to do besides eating helps ie practice music or go for a jog - for late nights, turn the volume down, or stare out the window of where i could be running :p
Plates of salad help too!
I still need to lose some weight from the HSC - too many cups of coke and bags of jubes -_-;;

Re: Instead of eating: Healthy approach to eating!

The only healthy 'solution' to this sort of thing that works for me is dance classes :S It doesn't stop me constantly nibbling, but it does help lessen the 'side effects' :p

I hate doing things like running/weights, because I find them incredibly boring. Even the thought of doing them is incredibly boring to me - I need mental stimulation, and the TV in front of mum's treadmill doesn't have foxtel! :'( lol.

Re: Instead of eating: Healthy approach to eating!

Take the bulimic approach: laxatives are your friend.

Just ignore the distasterous side effects (kidney disease, heart failure, gum decay etc etc)

;)

Honestly though, I cant really think of anything of help... Maybe make yourself smoothies because they are really filling and relatively healthy (as long as you dont put in as much ice cream as I do ). But as Bored said above, its habit. Maybe just do heaps of study at the library so you cant eat! Or, set yourself a little basket of food you can snack on during the day and dont eat more than that...

Re: Instead of eating: Healthy approach to eating!

Something which I find sometimes works (in theory it's a good idea) is to force yourself to get up and go 10 star jumps every time you're about to go off and get food.

Normally this kick-starts your metabolism/energy level and it's like a kick from reality - you'll realise you're really not hungry at all, and usually you'll go back to study now that you've had a "break" and feel rejuvinated.

The other thing is to ONLY allow a snack after a certain amount of words. That's what I do a lot.

Another thing... if I have people online, I talk to them when I feel like procrastinating, and get them to use scare tactics to make sure I finish on time. I tell them to be really mean, and some of them are - the best I've heard so far is "Lynn if you don't get back to your study NOW I am going to tell _______ that you like him (which wasn't true) and want to do all sorts of kinky stuff with him!". I got my essay totally done that night :p

take up smoking. lol nah just kiddin. if you feel like you're going to go have a feed, maybe go to the gym instead? work off some stress and at the same time, ur losing weight. and as someone said before, studying at the library would be a good idea rather than in your room or whatever, where u can easily access food. i have this same problem- but with coffee lol. good luck!

Connect one electrode to right foot and wire it to a pressure sensor.

Whenever you decide to get up to the fridge ZAP! After awhile you'll be afriad to get up and walk, resulting in non-distracted study.

Thanx for all the ideas guys!

Iambored...Trust me i'de rather stand around the kitchen nibbling than being in my room studying lol but your right it is a habit

Icf and kimmi- i HATE jogging on real surface lol i'm probably some freak but I prefer the treadmill and the gross smell of the gym to that of fresh air outside.

I do goto gym a fair bit, just came from there(5 nights a week these days, its a massive stress reliever coz i've been sitting on my ass doing assignments all day and eating crap these days) but it's usually at the end of the day these days, around 9pmish)... I need to change the eating habit while im at home during the day doing assignments and after the gym, if i went to the gym everytime i felt like eating something I'de be the skinniest girl in the world lol

pb!- you can afford to gain a few kilos good lookin ;) i unfortunately if i did i'de have to apply for the next biggest loser show lol

Okay this is what I'm going to do from now on when the fridge starts calling my name:
  • Think about all the work I have to do and I only have so n so time to do so- thanx iambored
  • Glitter! I love the starjumps approach! I'ma just do that
  • Binge on water
  • Chat to someone I havn't spoken to in ages on my msn list
  • air-popped popcorn sounds like a good idea, my naturalist herbalist would chuck a spastic though, if he found out i was snacking on carbs at night :mad1:
  • stick a photo of Fiona Falkiner on fridge lol omg how hot is she!
  • Take drugs and laxatives jks lol thanx mj redrum ;)

Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu :)

Urrm last november after exams, thats when i went on detox (coz i gained sooo much!) then after that went back to eating crap coz of christmas n stuff and started seriously in jan-feb of this year just switched from white stuff to brown stuff eg... white rice to brown rice, white bread to brown bread.

After awhile though i couldn't lose anything even though i increased excercise two-fold, weight wouldn't budge for like 3 weeks..(extremely frustrating!) so i got myself a naturalist herbalist who put me on this ketogenic diet thing coz apparently i hit my "plateu"...it worked wonders and lost 2kgs after being on it after a week and a half.

However I couldn't stand it lol so went off it after 2 weeks and incorporated all the stuff i learnt from trying all these different diets and just tried to turn it into a lifestyle (i still have maccas, kfc, go out to restaurants etc but in moderation and it has to be compensated i.e more weight training/cardio). Weight fell off consistently after that but only in small increments.

And now!... i think i hit another "plateu" coz the weight isn't budging gahh! and I'm too scared to go see my naturalist herbalist guy again because i quit his thing after 2 weeks hahaha. Apparently i've got 9kgs to go to get to my healthy weight but i want to lose at least another 11-13.
---------------

And nope i wasn't at macq centre this evening i was at woolies across the road from uni around 8pm though?? lol

It was pretty intense... it had to be coz your trying to get over the "plateu". You don't feel hungry during it though like most other diets which was the positive thing.

There's a saying that weightloss is 80% diet and 20% excercise

It's pretty much low carb, high protein, not mixing your carbs and your fats. It sounds like atkins but its not trust me, you still get to eat your carbs, just not at night or for dinner. I'll pm you later with a menu plan later if u want? The diet advocates keeping your muscles and losing fat. Most people lose weight but then they gain it back so easily because they've lost muscle mass as well. You also have to incorporate weight training as well as cardio, if you just do cardio and cardio only, sure you lose weight but you also lose muscle mass.

Have you tried calorie controlled? I.e find out how much calories your body needs to maintain its weight, then work off 500 calories through diet or excercise? The logic is there i havn't tried it coz im too cheap to buy the calorie books but apparently you can't go wrong coz the math is there. I'm trying it come holidays, it'll be good plus i want to be able to learn about the Glycemic (sp?) index and get to know the scientific side of getting fit.

The book, "Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle", by Tom Venuto is quite good. Umm...If anyone is interested in a free "trial copy", PM me. :p

Re: Instead of eating: Healthy approach to eating!

low-GI diets are ok my my book. (err, figuative book as I am one of those people who can't be bothered sticking to a diet any longer than 24 hours)

Something that DID sort of work for me for a while was something based off the weight-watchers "points" diet. You start off with x amount of points each day, and subtract/add depending on how much/what you eat, and how much you exercise. So basically, the more you exercise that day, the more stuff you can eat :)

In regards to the weight-loss saying, call me stupid but I come from a dance background so we say it's about 10% diet/what you eat and 90% exercise/metabolism :p A number of my dance friends (none of them ballerinas though) regularly eat maccas and are skinny as sticks - however they are also very muscular and have super-fast metabolisms.

The appeal of concentrating more on exercise is something that appeals to me because there's nothing worse than feeling hungry, or craving for a food you're "not allowed to eat". Whereas if you're exercising and can feel the burn, you KNOW you're doing something good.

I guess everyone's heard this before but when exercising to loose weight you need to make sure you have variety in what you do - most people have a preferance for a certain type of activity/pace and will stick to that long after they need to switch to something else. This is what can create a "plateau" - the solution is to get more variety, to pick up something new (preferably of higher intensity, paticularly if we're talking cardio. But you need to keep up some weight work as well).

Actually, now you've got me thinking.

Do any other MQ girls want to form a little "We're going to loose weight AND pass our exams!" club? I know it'd be good for me to go back to stretching/strengthening every night (ha, if this "no effing way I'm giving up even half a kilo!" body of mine wants to loose some weight, that would be so cool). And the mother of chocolate knows how badly I need to get a move on with my assessments :p
