ok I know ive put a lot about this topic of me dropping from math advanced to standard here but im getting so many different oppinions on what I should do its overwhelming idk what to do.

basically I failed my year 11 prelim math advanced exam like really bad same with the previous one, my math teacher is telling me to do standard but others like the department head is telling me to just keep math advanced

Like I know what I did wrong in studying for math, ive always hated math and never studied properly and I know how to move forward but my only concern is that I have a LOT of gaps in my knowledge like year 10 I did bad in it as well (5.3 maths) and so I right now probably have some gaps in year 10 knowledge and 11.

I want to do a double degree in UNSW (https://www.unsw.edu.au/study/undergraduate/bachelor-of-commerce-design1?studentType=Domestic) and its not Math advanced being a prerequisite it says its only "reccomended"

the atar requirement is 93 and I feel that if I was to do standard I can achieve that whereas if I do advanced I have to allocate a lot of Time into studying for it and may not even get the needed ATAR

Howdy!

I currently do Accelerated Advanced Mathematics and I'm currently at a Band 5 for HSC.

I can tell you that from Year 8 to last year (Year 11), I completely flopped math and only started picking up the effort after my Preliminary Exam. I think I was in the Band 2 or 3 range for prelims. I had to do a lot of study to fill the gaps I had for preliminary content that I ignored.

I can completely relate and I absolutely hate math, and have never been a math person so it's definitely difficult for me to grasp concepts. It's kind of refreshing to see someone who dislikes math since I'm always surrounded by people who love it. I take math since it's a prerequisite for the course I want to do.

In saying this, it really is up to you and what your capabilities are. I've had people in my cohort wait it out until the first Year 12 assessment and then decide whether to drop or not, so that could be an approach you could take if your school allows that.

It is possible to turn it all around for math and get a decent mark, it's just up to whether you're willing to put in the study. Despite Maths Advanced not being a prerequisite, I guess you could have the mindset that it is and use that to motivate you.

Hope this helps out a bit!

I was in a very similar predicament last year. I got like 13% in my prelim for Maths Advanced, and I also felt like I did a lot wrong in studying for maths.

I ended up going to Math Standard for year 12 and I can't recommend it highly enough. The level of maths is very easy, and I went from 13% to 97% in my first exam.

Your situation might be different to mine, and there is definitely a case to continue Maths Advanced. However you should know that Maths Standard is so much easier than Advanced, and therefore much easier to get a better mark.

Hope this helps.
