Limewire problem (1 Viewer)

there seems to be a problem with my limewire, and it doesn't seem to be a version problem since it happened to both my old version (4.8 pro) and my current version (4.9.3 pro). limewire just starts up on system start-up, even though i have it disabled. and when you close limewire, it'll just start-up again without even clicking anything.

i even tried looking through msconfig but found nothing that could help.


anyone know how i could fix limewire so it won't keep starting up on me? even at the moment i have it open because if i close it it will just startup again. before i was forced to uninstall it everytime just to avoid this problem.

try use a proper virus and spyware scanner...

after that uninstall limewire and reinstall another p2p program which also uses the gnutella network such as bearshare or shareaza...

also scan every file after you download it....

i had the same problem. shortygb has the right idea - just run a virus scan and it should pick it up. run as many virus scanners as you can as well as anti-spyware.you could always just toggle the auto-startup a few times and it seems to do the job just as well.

ad-aware fixed that problem on a computer i was servicing the other day... try it

yeah i've got the latest version of lavasoft ad-aware - ad-ware SE personal build 1.06r1 and i've run the scan heaps of times. and it still doesn't fix my problem.

yeah, ogmzergrush, he has the pro version, but did he actually purchase it, or download it through the free version of limewire, like i didnt?
if all else fails, you could just uninstall and start from scratch?

i had this problem, its a virus and it not only messes with your limewire but also ends up playing around with your RAM and lags your comp badly

click ctrl+alt+dlt
click processes tab
alphabetically organise names (or it also uses alot of cpu)
if theres on there called winupdates.exe thats the virus

spyware programs will not help this problem, and im not sure about virus programs as this virus runs in your memory form startup.
i browsed google looking for a solution to this problem and you will have to kill it manually

ahhh i finally found the instructions again, hf getting rid of it. trust me its WORTH it

1) Uninstall Limewire. You can reinstall it at the end of these steps.

2) Disable System Restore in Windows. This can be done by right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties, and then clicking on the System Restore tab. Then check the box Turn Off System Restore. Hit Apply, and then OK. If you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.

3) Now we need to fool the virus into allowing us to open the Task Manager. This can be done by copying the Task Manager executable file from the Windows directory. To do this, go to c:\windows\system32, select the file taskmgr.exe, right click on it, and select Copy. Go to the desktop, and click on an empty part of the desktop. Then right click on the desktop, and select Paste.

4) Double click on the taskmgr.exe file on your desktop. This should open the Task Manager. Click on the Performance tab. If you are in fact infected with a virus, you will likely (although not necessarily) see close to 100% CPU usage!! Now click on the Processes tab, followed by clicking twice on the CPU column header. What this does is order the files running on your computer based on the amount of CPU resources they are consuming in real time. If there is a process, other than System Idle Process, that is consuming close to 100% of the CPU, then it is this process (or file) that is infecting your computer. For me, and likely for a lot of you, that file will be winupdates.exe. Don't be tricked. This is not a Microsoft program. It's a virus masking itself as a legitimate file. Please remember the exact name of this process, because you will need it in a later step.

5) Click on this process to highlight it, then click the button End Process. A warning prompt should pop up. Click on Yes.

6) Now that this process is killed, we need to remove any references to it from the Registry. Once again, because this virus is blocking us from opening the Registry Editor, we need to trick the virus by copying the file to the desktop. Follow the same steps as in number 3, except this time, copy the following two files from their respective directories, and paste them on the desktop.

c:\windows\regedit.exe
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

7) Open regedit from the desktop. In the left window, click on My Computer so that it is highlighted. Now select Edit from the menu, followed by Find. In the Find box, type the name of the process that you ended from the Task Manager. If you recall, mine was winupdates. Do not include the .exe, just winupdates. Then click Find.

8) For the item that it found in the right window, click it to highlight it if it isn't highlighted already, and then right click on it, and select Delete. If a prompt pops up, select Yes or OK to confirm the delete.

9) Now, hit the F3 button once. This will find the next reference to that bad file. Follow step 8 again to delete the reference. Repeat steps 9 and 8 until the editor indicates that there are no more references to this file. Then exit the editor.

10) Finally, click on cmd.exe which you copied to the desktop. It will open the Command Prompt (which looks like DOS). Type the following commands in order, and hit Enter after each line:

cd c:\
cd program files
rd /s /q winupdates

11) Now restart your computer. Reinstall Limewire.

and on another note

take note of this

make sure you dont download anything (especially in zip/rar form)
that is 851.7kb or 130something kb

these are viruses, and i know there are a few more around that size.
with the 130something one, it is found on pretty much any search you do, even weirdly named random searches, and it has alot of sources so its like urmm....
851.7kb always contains many sources and alot of other files of the same name/size, especially in known programs or whatever your looking for.

(as much as i dont download this) if you download porn, they often come with certificates that you need in order to view the files, these "certificates" are more than likely unauthorised. which means full of spyware or a virus. even a dimwitted moron would know that most porn has something on the side, so just dont download it at all.

wow. that looks like an awesome solution, but as much as i love tweaking computers, i aint real confident in tinkering with my registry. if worse come to worse and it gets really bad, ill go through with the manual repair. but yes, it is driving my system up the wall

well that virus is the only thing ive had on this comp the whole time ive had it since december last year, and i barely get any spyware thanks to my trend micro pc-illin firewall(which even stoped me using my microphone till i found out), virus protection, spyware, it does everything.

even weirder, i dont have a system32 folder in my windows directory.

yes, the virus disables all the things you use to get rid of it, thats why in those instructions you have to duplicate them to your desktop to access them

i can't duplicate a file i can't find. i tried manually searching for it though my whole computer, running deep searches through hidden files and folders and found nothing.

here's the interesting part:

i open windows explorer and go to c:\ > windows\ > SYSTEM32\

and all of a sudden windows explorer will close itself, kind of like a 'mini crash' - for a second, all but the wallpaper disappears and then everything comes back in a matter of seconds.

and even then, i still can't find taskmgr.exe!! ahh its driving me crazy. i can find a 'taskman', i dont know if its the same thing, but i tried duplicating that on the desktop. i tried running that and nothing happened.

my computer is majorly and utterly fked.
