okay, how to name esters? is ethyl butanoate ethanoic acid and butanol? or other way round? Does the acid or the alcahol come first? I cant find the information in my text book.. Also, could someone quickly recap the structure in terms of (alcahol)(what comes here)(acid)

Nope its ethanol and butanoic acid. Just remember the longer one (acid) becomes the longer one (-oate)

the other way around, alcohol correspond to the alkyl and so on

as for the structure the -O-H from the alkanoic acid react with the -OH functional group in alkanol, condenses out water and leaving the -O- holding the two molecules together
