well think about where you see yourself doing. look at your interests/strengths and try matching careers to that. have a look into them.

what subjects do you do atm?

they earn money by being psychologists maybe? lol.

have you tried doing work experience or anything? Speaking to a careers counsellor? You could always take time off between school and starting uni, it'd give you time to work out what you want to do. Go through the UAC guide and cross out all the courses you know you don't want to do, at least that would narrow it down. It's what I did.... because I've got no clue where I'm going!

Or do something that interests you, that you'd enjoy for now. You can always change degrees later if you change your mind.

Don't worry though, lots of people can be in their 30's and still not know what they want to do :p

To become a psychologist, you have to do the degree and then complete honours to become registered and practice as a psychologist. Not sure if theres difference between counsellor and psychologist.

For those not knowing what to do, im not sure about the other states but QTAC have sessons where you pay a bit of money and go and talk to a careers adviser.

But my best advice is go and talk to people at the careers fairs and uni/tafe open days and see how you go from there.

Nah, you don't actually have to complete an honours year to register as a psych, you need to complete a four year degree (minimum time it takes) and two additional years of either postgrad training or supervised experience

This is what Qld uni of technology (QUT) says about psychology:

Why choose this course?

The Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) provides the first step towards a career as a registered psychologist. The course is fully accredited by the Australian Psychology and Accreditation Council (APAC) and eligible graduates can undertake additional postgraduate studies required for professional registration.

Career Options

On successful completion of the degree you may either pursue a career in a range of vocations where your skills are valued, undertake further study to become a registered psychologist or seek postgraduate studies in psychology or other disciplines.

Honours

Many graduates wish to pursue careers in professional areas of psychology. To do so you must be registered with your state registration board. This currently involves completing a fourth year of study in psychology (eg Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Honours Psychology) or Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology), followed by either two years of supervised work experience or the completion of an appropriate higher degree such as a Doctor of Psychology (Clinical), Master of Clinical Psychology or Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental).

There's a difference between studying psychology and becoming a psychologist

At ANU you do your undergrad psych degree
obtain a credit average
do an honours year
get accepted into clinical program/research program
graduate = registration with the medical board

Then you can specialise in neuro pysch, sports psych, child/adolescent psych, organisation psych (money!!), educational psych etc.

There is HUGE difference between a counsellor and a pyschologist. A counsellor has done a counselling course, very short, easy to obtain. Psychologist has done all of the above.

You can register as a psychologist without doing honors, not everyone gets the marks to get into honors so it would mean a whole lot of people would have wasted an entire degree and not enough psychologists if that was the case :p. Honors is needed if you want to go into the research area though.

"the completion of four full-time years of academic study in psychology plus two additional full-time years of either postgraduate training in psychology or supervised workplace experience as a probationary/conditional registered psychologist"

It's the 2 years of postgrad training or supervised experience you need before you can become a probationary psych.

^^ its different at ANU,

Students aiming for full membership of the Australian Psychological Society will need to complete six years of tertiary study and appropriate supervised practice. The BSc (Psych) feeds in to the Honours program in psychology. Postgraduate training in clinical psychology is also available within the School, as are postgraduate research degrees.

Oh, maybe it's because it's a bachelor of science majoring in psych? If you're doing a B of Science (psych) or Arts (psych) I know you need an honors year to meet APS guidlines. On the website it says an APS approved 4 year degree plus the 2 years of post grad or training... so that could be what makes it 6 maybe? I dont think it matters what uni you're at cos the guidelines are the same everywhere in NSW.

Meh I'm just going by the website and info we were given anyway :p
