Hey everyone,

I am just wondering if anybody has any notes they could share with me on Indochina in the preliminary course; particularly on Vietnam.

If you do, I would greatly appreciate it if you could reply to this thread or send me a PM.

Thank you!

I'm curious and I may have missed it but I don't remember Indochina being in the year 11 course?

in year 12's peace and conflict topic one of the electives is conflict in Indochina, with a pretty decent focus on vietnam, maybe you could look at the conflict in indochina hsc notes instead

That's what I was thinking.. because this year we do Indochina (particularly the rise of communism, imperalism etc) 1954-1971.. I'm not sure if that is what we do in the year 12 syllabus though.

Maybe our school just does it twice. Because our teacher said we do it again next year? Hmm

I'll have a look, thank you!

1954-1971 is similar to the timeline of indochina (though i think it's in 1989)? but it's mostly focused on the occurrences during the conflicts like the tactics the viet cong used and the offensives that happened i think. it might be a part of your historical investigation then, seeing as the prelim course has a set list of case studies and i don't remember indochina being one of them

Ok ok, so basically I asked my teacher abt this today. She told me that our historical investigation is entirely separate and we pick our own topic.
Then for this term we're doing Indo China up until 1954, so nationalism + decolonisation, all of that kind of thing.

I suppose your teacher wants you to have an understanding of the tensions leading to the Indochina war as examined in the HSC. Fair enough, given that a lot of schools do that. In mind they did Japan so we could understand what their perspectives were when they were engaged in the Pacific War.

As for resources, see the following:
1. https://libguides.msben.nsw.edu.au/modernhistorycasestudy/indochina - though the website is a bit hard to navigate, they have videos that may help.
2. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Indochina_War - Yes it's Wikipedia. No you cannot use it *directly* as a source. What you can do, however, is look at the footnotes and quotes/stats/images to further your understanding. Footnotes will allow you to access potential sources for research.
I hope this helps!
