Ahem, well as that's my page....;)

Uh oh, looks like I really stuffed up the order of the pages. I'll fix that tonight.

Anyway - the idea is basically

Eddy currents induced in Al ring > Lenz's Law > repulsion of ring.

Of course you had to fill in the details about direction of induced current, resultant magnetic field and consequent force to get the 4 marks, but you get the idea. They weren't too picky for this one.

Got the Newington physics with answers, but lent it to someone. No space left anyway...next week if anyone's interested :).

Y'know hosting a separate site with trial papers defeats the purpose of a 'one-stop shop for HSC resources'. :p

I hope this explains the problem - post any specific questions you have.

The dotted lines are going behind the solenoid.

Hey, I did mail jamesking@optushome.com.au about it (is that you?) and was told that you guys have the papers but haven't got around to putting them up yet. But the site was already up so....yeah :)

Yep, that's me - what did I say? We have some of them, I don't think we have all of them (esp. not solutions). I really should get around to putting up the rest. Will include in the next update.

I suppose it doesn't matter too much so long as your site doesn't randomly go down or something (hah, as if we can talk =P). And so long as you don't start a string of independent trial-hosting sites. :p one should be fine.

As if I have the time to do that! :p

I understand what happens but how do you apply the right hand palm rule (I assume thats what you use) to show the force on the alluminium ring is upwards?

You don't use the right-hand palm rule; the reason why the aluminium ring moves upwards is because the induced magnetic field repels the original one (and it has to do this, by Lenz's Law).

The upwards movement is not due to a summative force on individual charges in the ring.

The charges themselves would experience a force inwards, perhaps causing the ring to contract slightly - but this doesn't contradict the upwards movement, because the induced and original magnetic fields still repel each other.

Please don't click on the link, save the file to your hard drive and then read it. You probably don't have Acrobat configured properly with your browser.
