so who exactly was the one who came up with the quantum theory? einstein or planck?

who came up with the term quanta?

Planck is the father of quantum physics
Einstein used it and expanded it however when he explained the photoelectric effect

To put it simply, Max Planck created the field of quantum physics when attemtping to describe black body radiation, in particular trying to resolve the "ultra-violet catastrohpy". He postulated that light did not transfer energy continuously, but delivered it in discrete "packets" of energy known as "photons" of light (which are the particles of light's wave/particle duality).

Einstein then built upon this work by applying it to the photoelectric effect, stating that in order for electrons to be emitted, the incident photons had to first overcome the "work function", the smallest amount of energy required to liberate one electron from the metal's surface. Any excess energy the photons had would be transformed into kinetic energy, allowing the electrons to move.

So yes, Planck created the field of quantum physics, and Einstein applied his theories to the photoelectric effect.

no Einstein did.

plank did not look into it at all. all he did was derive a formula that explained the observed effect. But einstein took that formula and gave it a explaination on the propagation of light and how it is a continous stream of photons. Einstein was also the first that explained the photoelectric effect, which lead to the quantum theory.

so i believe its einstein, while plank did give a basis and it can be considered the practical/experimental back up to einstein.

yeah its really an area of debate. Thats why this paticular debate is assess...So long as you justidy your conclusion/side of the debate you choose you won't be marked wrong ;)

just to justify. all plank did was derive a formula from the experimental data. Where he found that the energy is all in the multiples of "h". is that all he did?

that all i remember though..

Yeah he came up with a formula for Black Body Radiation
His formula was based on statistical mathematics, and it worked by using the concept of energy being vibrated by atoms in quanta, discrete values. He didn't like his theory, so he didn't move forward with it. But it worked..I'm not sure if he actually used teh word quantum but his approach was the same nonetheless (even though he himself disagreed with it)

Just clarrifying something tpc13 said. Planck did not describe quantisation of light or the wave/particle duality or use the term photon. The quantisation he described was due to a property of the black body (oscillators) that were emitting the light.

I wouldn't use the term.

Planck's mathematical mind enabled the idea to be triggered.
But Einstein's free thinking was able to give the equation a physical meaning and led to the change in thinking and the development of Quantum mechanics, something Planck's traditional scientific methods would never have developed.

Lets remember that in the end that both men catogorically rejected quantum mechanics as a whole theory. Their interpretation of quantum theory is different to the developments of the early quantum mechanics.

Planck, in addition, is the father of quantum theory because he ultimatley was the person who quantised energy in the first place - we can't just give the honor to Einstein because he rectified belief in it by explaining the photoelectric effect.
