right, so when you're referring to texts,
is it taboo to abbreviate the title of the text in that way *points down at example*
to shorten it for future reference?

eg:

bla bla... the text "As You Like It" (AYLI) written by...

is it ok to use this abbreviation? i have a vague recollection of my english teacher ranting
(as she often does) about marking hsc papers and becoming infuriated with having to decipher all the TJKDH type of abbreviations..

any help would be great :]

yes it is taboo because it disrupts the flow of the essay when the marker reads it. if you find it too tedious to keep mentioning (even though u should consistently draw links between texts), then be specific and use the character's name in the other text ie in ur case ganymede, rosalind, celia

My english teacher said that it's better to say:

"I Had Been Hungry All The Years" > "I Had Been... Years"

Honestly I just write the title out every time.
