my apologies to anyone who is annoyed by the rebirth of this game in a new thread :p

but seeing as it is just a few weeks before trials, let's play it again.

same rules, i name a chemistry term and explain its meaning, giving as much relevant information as possible. the next person takes the last letter of my chemistry term and create a new chemistry term, repeating what i've done... usw. :)

(note: make sure it's in the syllabus, and feel free to make corrections.)

catalytic cracking: the process which "cracks" or converts high molecular weight fractions from crude oil are broken into lower molecular weight substances such as propene and ethene in order to increase the output of high-demand products.
E.g: C15H32 --> C10H22 + C5H10
The catalyst for the reaction is composed of an inorganic compound - zeolite (an aluminosilicate) which provides a large surface area for the reaction to occur. the reaction takes place in an anerobic environment with a temperature of 500 degrees Celsius.

:D It's baaaaaack!!!!! :D

Gravimetric analysis: A type of quantitative analysis which allows you to calculate the exact percentage composition of a particular substance within a mixture of substances.
This method involves determining the exact mass of both the mixture and the particular substance within the mixture.

YAY! :D a reply!

styrene: monomer from which polystyrene is made. common name is ethenylbezene. structure of monomer:
CH2=CH-"benzene ring" (lol sorry about that)

LOL, oh crap.

ethanol: C2H5OH. belongs to the homologous group alkanols. can be made by the hydration of ethene:

C2H4(g) + H2O(l) diluted H2SO4 cat. > C2H5OHaq

it can also be made via the process of fermentation of glucose:

C6H12O6(aq) yeast > 2C2H5OHaq + 2CO2(g)

it is a potential alternative fuel source to petrol because it emits less greenhouse gases, and is a renewable resource.

Eutrophication : The process of eutrophication involves the increase in nutrient content of a body of water resulting in excessive growth of plants, which when they die, causes oxygen depletion during the decay process. The oxygen depletion threatens the survival of fish.

Non-polar solvent : A medium which dissolves solutes by the interaction of dispersion forces only. Non-polar solvents prefer non-polar solutes. Examples include benzene and tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride).

Dissolved oxygen: Dissolved oxygen levels indicate the water’s ability to support aquatic life. Oxygen levels increase where there is increased contact between water and air (such as tumbling of water and wave formation). DO can be measured by a thallium oxygen-sensitive probe, or by a Winkler titration.

(Im new at this games, but it looks like a good idea)

Salt : A substance held together by electrostatic interactions of positively and negatively charged ions (ionic bonding). Salts are typically solid at standard state, though liquid salts exist (ex. 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate). Typically high boiling points and poor strength in compression and tension. Solutions of salts are known as electrolytes. Molten salts and electrolytes conduct electricity.

NeoN??! *slaps buds across the head*

Neutralisation: an exothermic reaction between an acid and a base to produce salt and water.

Eg. HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) --> NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + heat

EDIT: i just realised that i am such a hypocrite :p make the word neutralising instead. lol :rolleyes:

mole: a unit of measument of an element or compound. It measures the amount of substance of a system and is defined as the amount of substance that contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in exactly 0.012 kilogram of carbon-12.
