I always write about what genre I'm interested in or reading at the time. I usually base my short stories around the Young Adult (YA) genre because I've read so many YA books and I relate to them easily, hence being able to write well in that area.
You might be interested in fantasy or sc-fi. Write about them.
If you don't read AT ALL then you can always draw inspiration from personal experience (e.g moving schools and trying to belong, an absentee parent, a romance, a fist fight etc) and just exaggerate certain features of it to make it sound interesting or better.
For example if you based a story on a real-life experience, of let's say trying to find out who stole your socks, then you could turn the missing socks into a missing brother or sister and then you could put a twist on it and maybe morph into a crime fiction based short story? You could also take that story from a more emotional angle like a distressed brother or something. If you think that might be too complicated then just have the neighbours search for your missing person then discover she was playing hide-and-go-seek and hiding in the cupboard or something.
Hope this helps. Obviously english is my forte, lol.
