Thanks for all the advice people. I think skipping is the most convenient for me at the moment.

I have skipped for 1 hour before, with small breaks (to change the tv channel), but I can only keep it up for 2-3 days a week and become extremely lazy afterwards.

So if I keep a balanced diet, skip for 30-1 hour a day 6 days a week, it'll work right?
i think it depends on the speed of your jog, but generally skipping burns more calories. i did read/hear somewhere that you should aim to do 2/3 minutes fasr skipping, and then slow down for 1 minute, and then go 2/3 minutes again. apparently it works better if you want to lose weight.

hey guys, OP here. I've been skipping (and some swimming) for 30-45mins for the past 3 nights + eating in moderation and I have lost 1.5 kg. I know at this stage it is nothing, but if I keep doing this I'll eventually reach my goal. Slowly but surely.

The only problem I've encountered so far is that my calf muscle starts hurting after a couple of days. What are some relevant stretches to do prior and after skipping? And from now on I think l should start wearing trainers when I skip as well.

have you been skipping barefoot or sandals/thongs? no wonder your calves are sore!

well you could always think about doing a recovery section in the pool...that is to say you skip for a bit, go off to the pool and recover there or do your (swim) workout there then recover.

as for stretches you know the basic calf stretch right? here is an example. surely you've at least done it in P.E. in yr 7-10. through slight changes of your foot position (instead of straight having it diagonal), bending the back leg you target different muscles in your leg and also the achilles tendon. also, definitely look to stretch your hamstrings because while there is less stress on them the less cramped they are the better it will be on your calves.

hmm... is it possible to gain weight after working out? Last night I skipped for 1 hour and did 50 push ups + 50 sit ups.

Muscles are heavier than fat, right?

I'm sorry but I beg to differ. All these people claiming that jogging is better than swimming when it comes to weight loss are surely mistaken.

Science even proves this wrong. I'm not trying to imply that jogging is a time-waster or that its not very effective but when compared to swimming its very clearely out of its league.

Swimming is a complete body workout. If you can master the technique or at least try to then you will surely see results. Swimming first of all really hits the cardio-vascular system, your lungs expand therefore assisting with asthma and ultimately getting more oxygen to the muscles. Swimming is also a natural body toner, toning if you dont know burns or decreases a person's body fat so the muscles can be toned and defined. In all honesty, being a confidant swimmer myself, if you do freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly and don't feel any change in your body then you've really got a problem.

My advice, swim more than jog. So in a day for example, swim for about 2-3 hours the jog for about an hour or so. Swimming swears allegiance to better health, remember that.

Swimming... you tend to not stop when you feel like it...
As for jogging will lose more weight ... but tendancy to stop and walk or call it a day...
why not do a little of both or rotate each wk...
I swim each morning then jog at night....
the gym also is a good place to start especially in the winter months

As many people have already said rotating your types of exercise will help signficantly as it does work different muscles causing you to "feel the burn" more often, but you must also think of it this way...if u want to lose weight you will first lose any excess fat your body carries which will then be turned into muscle which is heavier thus increasing weight. so if you swim you are generally working out a lot more muscles in your body then skipping or jogging would do and thus more of your limbs will be turning into muscle (over time) which could possibly increase your weight...but it would be muscle ;)...also i think that joggging or especially skipping would make you more fit than swimming..your heart muscle will benefit greatly along with your lungs...

happy exercising :)

is there a limit to the amount of calories you can burn off each day?

All depends on how long and how intensely you workout. If you just ran all day you'd use up a fucktonne. Healthy weightloss is recommended as like .5-1kg a week for the average person.

The best solution for losing weight is power walking.
Jogging and Swimming works out the cardio vascular more so

If you need 2400 but only get 2000, and this is consistently not just overnight, you will lose weight.

Using more calories than you take in = weight loss.
Taking in more calories than you use = weight gain.

That said, I would suggest focusing simply on making sure that you eat healthily and exercise. If you lose weight, awesome. If you don't, adjust your diet or exercise a bit, and go from there.

you wont gain weight immediately after the workout but when you exercise you'll likely put on muscle which is more dense than fat and probably the reason for the increase in weight.

Now, keeping all that in mind, I saw a heart specialist a month ago as it was compulsary for me to. He said that exercise all together doesn't make that much of a difference in terms of weight loss. He said that you have to RUN (not jog) around 15km in order to lose 1kg of weight (in which case most will be fluid). So the real way to lose weight, according to him, is just to eat right.

I find that exercise does help though. Obviously it expends some calories so keep at it. As you become fitter you naturally burn off more fat calories anyhow. So that's an incentive to exercise :) lol

Just diet properly - not too many carbs and you should be right.

EDIT: Re: OP - like many people have said, a mix of various types of exercises is a good idea. You also wont get bored :D
the arguement wasn't whats better to lose weight, dieting or exercise. It was, which exercise is more efficient for weight loss- swimming or jogging.
