Is it a good idea to buy textbooks now? Or should I just wait later?
Also I hear people talking about selling "readers", what is a "reader" exactly?

Wait until the first week. The lecturer will say if you need to buy anything or not.

Readers are basically like notes that you buy from the university copy centre, i think.

For some units, the recommended textbooks are actually readers. So some units may require readers, others your lecturer will probably inform you (or you can ask them).

"Mandatory" ... It's just just to increase textbook sales.

Ask people around here (or make a thread in the USYD Forums) stating which subjects you are doing. There is bound to be a user who has done at least one of them, so they'll be able to tell you which books you will or will not need.
