Hey guys, just wondering what your opinions are on the Elgin/Parthenon marbles and whether they should be returned to Greece.

Here is a little light reading stolen from the web about it if you dont know about it:

The Elgin Marbles are a collection of classical Greek marble sculptures that belong to the Pathenon and other buildings on the Acropolis in Athens.

Removed by Lord Elgin from 1801 to 1812 under permission of the "Ottoman Authorities" they are now displayed in the British Musuem. This is an act of cultural vandalism.

Although they may have been saved, this would have been from Ottoman destruction as the Acropolis was used as an "Ottoman military fort" not greek.

So pretty much my view on this is that the English stole the marbles in a time of war, and are now housing them in their museum and are refusing to return them to Greece. Infact, the british mueseum holds many curtual belonging which dont belong to them like the crown jewls (from India), parts of ruins from Afganastan, extracts from Aboriginal cave paintings and heaps of other stuff from across the world.

Just wondering what your thought are on this.

Just wondering what everyones thought

No. To cut a long argument short, the Marbles' ownership has been transferred to the Brits by virtue of care. A similar analogy would be bad parent who gets their child taken away from them.

It's exactly the same with the Rosetta Stone - the Egyptians want it back. But what are they going to do with it? They'd most likely stick it in the front of the Cairo Museum and push the other shit back - the Narmer Palette would be pushed back, the Ramesses statues would be pushed back, the Israel Stela would be pushed down the stairs and the Tutankhamun Restoration Stela would simply fall out the back of the museum along with all the other 'junk' like Akhenaten's sarcophagus which is seriously sitting outside being used as a fucking garbage bin.

Well in the case of the Greeks - is it going to be put in one of their crappy museums where grubby kids touch everything? Or is it going to be put back where it was at the top of the Parthenon (the 'right' place) where noone can see it and it can be eroded by rain? Edit: And if anyone brings up how they were damaged by cleaning efforts of the British Museum, are you going to suggest that the Greeks would have done a better job? The Greeks' idea of conservation is horrendous. To be honest, it's constant whinging of the super-left community which inflates the scale and significance of the damage.
