Question mark bubz.

Empire gave it 4 stars for importance rather than entertainment value.

i'm *hopefully* seeing it tonight.

i've had this odd fixation on seeing it since i heard about it, although i have no interest in seeing the Oliver Stone movie on 9/11 when it comes out.

i'm just hoping i don't bawl my eyes out in the middle of the theater.

it's incredibly powerful and pretty impossible to not be affected by... for the last half hour. until then it's extremely repetitive, mostly switching back and forth between the military and the FAA reciting info from dashboards and acting puzzled, when (imo) all the action should've been confined to the plane. but the final scenes of the film are among the most harrowing i've seen in any film, and enough to warrant recommendation/admiration.

i'm finding a lot of the reviews interesting, especially from NYC critics (obviously). i can understand both the arguments for how crucial it is and the reverse.

yeah it was a tad repetitive, but overall I thought it was brilliant.

I loved the ending.

I tear'd.

Is this a movie where they create a ficitional story on the fictional heroics of the passangers on that plane?

I guess there really aren't enough movies where Americans blow their own trumpet, so glad this one came along. USA, USA, USA!!!

No. The movie was made to be as close to the truth as possible.
Apparently transcripts of phone calls and the like were used verbatim to the script where possible

The film attempts to recount with as much veracity as possible (there is a disclaimer that some imagination had to be used).
Its the other shite one with Nick Cage, World Trade Centre or whatev that fits your description

Seen this film in UK in June, wonder why it take so long to release in Australia. The reason is was repetitive was they have to act the event step by step as in real life. The Aviation Administration chief in the film is acted by the actual person. Pretty realistic and it even showed hijackers clipping their pubic and ass hair before they set out for their suicide mission :D I am impressed by the film, be ready to shed some tears lol. I give it a rating of 7.5/10

Oh ok. I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard from a couple people that have seen it that the movie is a complete fantasy, and that the story often contradicts the few facts we do have about that plane.

Initially I'm thinking...9/11 is soo 2001 *yawn*. But it's received very good reviews, so I might consider it.

Edit: Here's a link a friend sent me which according to her, sums up the movie well: http://filmcritic1963.typepad.com/reviews/2006/04/united_93_.html

watched it tonight. was teary from the beginning when they were boarding the plane and bawling by the end. i actually found the repetition quite effective, and i agree, the ending was just... my god.

when the screen went black, the entire theatre was just dead silent. you could hear people breathing and me trying not to make the awful throaty noise that comes out involutarily when you're crying...

Maybe I'm just cold-hearted, but unless you knew someone who died, I don't really get the whole outpouring of emotion over 9/11 by Aussies with no association with America. Especially while watching a scripted movie no less!

Many more die in tragedies around the world and we barely blink...and people starve to death on a daily basis in the third world. Mass media, sensationalism and melodrama certainly play a part no doubt. I guess I follow the adage that "one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic".

But having said all that, I'm sure it'll be an entertaining movie and it's now on my TO SEE list after Snakes On a Plane.

I think what you're missing here is that 9/11 was a end to the relative calm the western world enjoyed through the nineties. It was also the beginning to this era we live in of terroism.

It's not so just "oh my god, so sad that they died", it's just pretty much symbolic of the exact moment of this end and beginning. It was also the catalyst for many political, cultural and social global changes that have resulted in the world we live in today relating to the middle east and islam in particular.

oh and it's not entertaining by the way. it's poignant, sad and touching. if you find that entertaining in a light hearted way then i'd agree with your assessment of cold hearted. it's painted in such a way that touches you no matter what. you cannot watch those people on screen say goodbye and know they're about to die without feeling something. the simple fact that you're watching the whole movie *knowing* they're doomed just adds to this sadness surrounding it.

(nb i was born in the states but i do have australian citizenship as well. so yes i have connections with the US)

Yeah, my last post was a bit of a flame-bait. I understand the political, global, social ramifications of 9/11, and obviously it was a time of sadness and reflection. But I do contend there was an element of emotional manipulation that was used quite effectively by politicians and the media. So my question is, how much of this uncontrollable emotional outpouring 5 years out by people who couldn't locate New York on a map genuine, and how much of is 'manufactured'?

Ok, entertaining was the wrong word in light of the movie. Interesting, though-provoking, engaging?

Oh, so it's a bit like Titanic, eh? :p

Hmm, would this be the wrong thread for The Chaser's 9/11 joke:
WORLD TRADE CENTER JANITOR DECLARES "Best sickie ever"

Edit - nb. I have a close connection to America as well, and family friends with soemone who was in one of the towers when the planes hit.

It's natural for people to feel more for similar people than those who appear different. Also, it's a movie, the entire experience is designed to play on people's emotions, it's upsetting to watch a movie documenting the life/death of a single person. We cry at our grannys funeral, we might cry when our dog dies, we might get upset upon seeing a random stranger get hit by a car and die.

All these deaths may, in the wider picture... be trivial, but to the person at the time, they're very important.

Heard it was good though and not some silly hero story from the Sun Herald article but I was one of the few who laughed when I heard the news so it's probably not a good idea for me to ruin it for others. I'll just rent it and laugh to myself instead.

Well just watched this movie and i must say it really makes you think...this is a movie about the flight united 93 that was hijacked on september 11 and never made its target due to the brave passengers on the plane. By the end of the movie i was shaking and it really made you think if you were ever in a situation like tnhat what would you do? would u fight or if you called your loved ones what would you say? has anyone else seen this movie? and if you havent it is a great movie to watch not because it is enjoyable but because it makes you think and appreciate those nncoent victims of 9/11 much more

I haven't seen the movie :(

But if this is a "what would you do" type of discussion, in that case, where death seems inevitable...I think once you got over that initial shock and came to acceptance, you probably would want to a final noble thing. However if there was someone standing over every single person so that death would be imminent, most people would probably not have the guts get to get the mutiny rolling. I dunno...its the sort of thing you cant answer unless youve been in a situation when your life has been at stake, and thankfully ive never been in one.
