Arguably the new and improved quillbot. Ask any question and it gives you an answer. No plagiarism because it independently generates. Godsend? Wolf in sheep's clothing?

Personally, I use ChatGPT for only the most tedious questions in my economics and english advanced essays on Gatsby that I don't have time to write.

As much as I love the application, I think it'll have grave impacts on students.. academic integrity will go out the window.. Sure, AI detectors might get better and better, but it's easy to reword the ideas it gives you. People will be using CHATGPT constantly, for assessments, for homework.. I think over time this will cause a decrease in essay writing ability and perhaps even critical thinking skills. Thus, the quality of exams and HSC writing will decrease. I'm tempted to put a blocker onto the app just to limit the temptation.

My friends say I'm being overdramatic. What do you think of ChatGPT? I'd love to hear everyone's opinions over here on BoredOfStudies.

i do think this will cause a decrease in those abilities. i've used chatgpt a few times to: a) see what the hype's about and b) make satirical love letters to people based on absurd circumstances .. i'm not sure about quality of exams.. it isn't really useful for me..
i don't think its impacts will be too major for hsc - esp for say, english or economics, as its style of writing and ideas are very very basic (didn't it fail a hsc eng exam ?).. i only see a minority using it rn and i doubt it'll work that well for them

ChatGPT’s golden. Some of these homework tasks I’m given have some of the most tiresome and futile questions they could have given us. When my teacher can’t tell the difference between a ChatGPT response and a human one, then it’s just a bad question. If it required any critical thinking or evidence, a ChatGPT response would net a band 4 maximum.

So I don’t really think ChatGPT is as profound as it’s made out to be. It’s really just an aggregator of the info from the internet. Most of its responses are in bullet point form anyway.
What it does do is relieve us of more repetitive work. Similar thing happened to manual labour in the Industrial Revolution and farm work in the Green Revolution. There is still blue collar and agricultural work, just less of it, relieving people into office work. ChatGPT will just push us into higher order work.

In a school scenario, I don’t think essay writing skills or critical thinking schools will decline at all. If schools adapt and ask more thought provoking, evidence based questions, which can’t be answered from a basic aggregate of the internet, then these skills could actually increase.

Again, provided schools work around it.

This is because university is mainly about content and problem solving (and proving it through individual invidulated examination), if you just get ChatGPT to do assignments you will not be learning problem solving and you will simply fail invidulated university examinations (which should be made substantially harder over the next decade, to correct for the prevalence of engines like ChatGPT in the learning process).

That said, the HSC has always been full of cheats because it is of no real consequence, ChatGPT just means cheating is easier. Sensible students use their time to try and learn and the outputs ChatGPT produces are too questionable to rely on for proper learning.

Raising difficulty is actually exactly what the universities will want to do, and even for written subjects a stronger emphasis on invidulated examination will become required.

Dropout rates in many university programs are actually quite high, because the workforce only needs small numbers of the absolute best in many disciplines, but you have to train a lot of people to find the best, so raising exam difficulty substantially is actually an ideal way to go as the best will always pass and because platforms like chatGPT are making assignments based course work redundant. Pass/Fail rates have a huge impact on employment prospects for individuals in accredited degree programs and for individuals in academia.
