They would do the course they're interested in. But, if they were looking to use their 99.95 to their full advatage then they would probably enter (besides Law and Medicine) Dentistry, possibly Engineering. Also, Physiotherapy would be up there too.

in response to the: why bother if it's just arts you want to do, it's because you get a huge (for a student!) scholarship if you get 99.95

i know a lot of .95ers, and a few 100s from back in the days. a lot go into med, some go into combined law, and one i know even went to do some sort of literature course and is now teaching eng at my school :)
the mentioned comm/advscimath is a popular choice also.

Daniel Swain from 2008 got 100, and then did Arts at Sydney Uni *shrug*.

To answer OP's question: it varies. Some do Engineering, others go overseas and do a BSc or BA, before doing a JD in a US Law school.

People do many different things just because you get a 99.95 ATAR doesn't mean you'll want to go into med or something I know my sister got a very high UAI yet wanted to do arts.

99.95 students do whatever they are interested in. I know of somebody years ago who got 99.80 UAI and did hairdressing because that's what she wanted to do.

The idea that if you don't 'use' all your ATAR points you are wasting them is silly.

Do what you have an interest in. Don't do a degree just because you can.

Its funny to see that in some cases a high ATAR can be as limiting as a low ATAR in stopping you from entering courses that you like. ATAR is handy and it is a marker of how hard you worked for that year but it definitely should not limit your choices! Starting at uni is like commencing from 0 again!
