As I understand it, marketing is a business/commerce subject but advertising is perceived as an arts/humanities/communication field.

But I've never really figured out the difference between the two.

Well with marketing you have to watch the stockmarket and make decisions based on where it's heading. With advertising you just need to get the message across as well as possible.

What are you doing up so late/early?? (I'm doing a bit of spring cleaning).

I thought they both concerned strategic marketplace decision-making (of which includes getting the message across)? Is there much crossover between them both? For example how does a marketing dept in a large corporation work in collaboration with their advertising dept? Does the marketing dept basically tell the advertising dept what/when?

Ah ok I think it's becoming clearer to me. So advertising is only a part of a larger marketing strategy? Do marketing students study advertising as well?
