You have to complete the outcomes for the Year 11 subject courses in order to take the corresponding Year 12 subject courses, for example, to do Economics in Year 12, you have to have completed the outcomes of the Year 11 Economics course. However, you can do as badly as you like, as long as you still complete the outcomes and pass the course. It can be a rank bottom pass, but a pass is all that counts. If you don't pass a Year 11 subject, you can't continue it in Year 12.

If you fail a subject that you're dropping, it should have no effect on your further Year 12 studies.

You must satisfactorily complete at least 12 units of courses in Year 11 to commence into HSC courses Year 12.
In a case where the you are likely to get an N award for a particular course, and it is outside your 12 units of study, then failing it shouldn't affect your eligibility for the entrance into the HSC course, as long as you satisfactorily complete your other 12 units. In the end you MUST DISCONTINUE that course by the time you reach Year 12.
However, if the course you are failing is within your 12 units of study, then you must redeem yourself to at least satisfactorily complete it, otherwise you cannot commence HSC study.

what?

Hmm i'm confused, so we DO have to pass all 12 subjects even though we only have to carry on with 10. ... and if we dont we have to repeat them, this is very scary. Surely thats not true... i hope :S

if you fail a subject, it does not mean you have to repeat year 11 and do everything again, it just means you might have to do the whole course in year 12, just that failed course unelss you're dropping.

You have to satisfactorily complete at least 12 units for the Preliminary course. It doesn't matter if you're dropping two units, to satisfy the outcomes of the Preliminary course you must complete 12 units for Year 11. You only have to satisfactorily complete at least 10 for the HSC. Note, however, that "satisfactorily" does not mean "utterly blitz the course". You simply have to meet the outcomes, which isn't too difficult at all.

Just to add on what insert-username said, it isn't scary at all. When they say you can't fail the course, doesnt mean you can't get <50.
You could get 20% for the course and still you're allowed through, as long as you gave a decent attempt to all of your tasks.
Just don't get more than one N award for not attempting an assessment task.

Lots of schools have that. Our school has to continue 1unit photography/psychology etc. until week 3 of term 4, as thats when we change our subjects for year 12.

It's really not a big deal, just go to the class and relax for a couple of hours of your life.
