depends on context... maybe they have a hearing problem and are just wondering what people are saying.... che ne dici???

Sì, sei corretto ma 'Scusa?' è un po' più gentile. Se dici 'Che?' in inglese, questo è un po' maleducato.

no. come means what...however many italians in australia dont speak italian, rather their dialect from their state/town... so if it is likely that those around you say como... its prob because they are speaking in their native dialect.

I just realised something. 'Che?' means 'That?'

It makes no sense!

Esempio:

Marco: Ciao Luigi! Come stai? (Hi Luigi! How are you?)
Luigi: Che? (That?)

See? It doesn't make sense!

che means different things but it depends on context... in ur eg it takes the form of What or Who

Eg: Credo che sei giusto... Eng: i believe that your right... here che takes 'That'

Eg2: Mi piace piu` Roma che Milano...Eng: i like rome more that Milan... here che takes the form of 'Than'

Italian very much depends on context... for more Examples based on che use try this site: che - Dizionario Inglese-Italiano WordReference.com

you cant translate it directly, it loses meaning. so whatever it translates to in english doesnt necessarily mean its whats being intended when said
