:apig: ahem. Greetings.

Not sure if this qualifies as 'News'...

I overheard some peeps at school talking about the NSW Gov changing the Learner Driver's License eligibility age from 16 to 17 yrs old as of July 1. I didn't question them at the time -- too engrossed in Physics lol.

Can anyone confirm/debunk this 'News'?

I'm pretty sure every parent would be outraged if they did...

Wouldn't make a difference anyway... until the rest of the fully licenced drivers start leading by example :)
Wouldn't parents be happy that their kids have less risk of having a car accident?

Having said that, I think the old 16 and 50 hours scheme was fine... if your too stupid to learn in that time period, either have a huge crash and suffer the consequences or wait until you're more mature

I reckon all of society's rules should cater to intelligent people, rather than to the worst examples of humans

The problem isn't that kids aren't getting enough experience... it's that parents either don't want or can't afford to take them driving for 50 hours, let alone 120... so they just fake it, because they also can't afford the time to keep driving their kids everwhere.

I didn't get my L's until I was 17 because I didn't feel ready... but I know drivers who are some of the best on the road who got their P's at 16 and did only 50 hours.

I still think the biggest problem is fully licenced drivers, including parents teaching their kids... they speed, drive dangerously, don't do simple things like check blindspots, slow down for speed cameras and then speed up again etc etc... so because everyone else does it, people do it inherently. Until speeding is so culturally unacceptable that NOONE does it, P-platers are gunna get killed on our roads. And lets face it, the majority of P-plater deaths are from speeding or thinking they're better drivers than they actually are.

I'm still waiting for them to bring in an anti-speeding campaign of something truly shocking. I reckon holding a child over a cliff edge and describing what will happen to their body when they hit the ground, and then describe how two cars travelling at 70kms an hour head on would do about the same amount of damage... and whether or not you want that to happen to your kids. Things like that... highly disturbing...

That or make every driver do a driving test once every 5 years... and make them do more advanced driving skill courses if they want to own powerful cars to prove they can handle them.

well i havn't herd about changing the age, but they are gunna make you do 200hrs startings 1st of july, i know of three people going to get their Ls today so they've only gota do 120...
lol, my sista rushed in a couple of years ago so shed only have to do 50.

but as everyone's said, i dont think it matters how long yr on yr Ls, if yr a dangerous driver then yr guna have an accident regardless, and its not fair on ppl who are safe or were just born to drive (safely) naturally.

They aren't making it 200. That's BS, as for making it 17 those rumours have been floating around since I was 16 4 years ago.

I don't think they'll ever raise the learner age because you need to be able to have your Ps when you finish year 12 (say if you start an apprenticeship or your uni has no public transport around), and lots of people are 17 when they graduate.

The rumour has been floating around for years and years.

Having licensed drivers teach kids how to drive works really well IMO. In Europe, where every lesson has to be with an instructor, you're looking at several grand for a licence. Granted, the drivers are better, but it puts driving out of reach of a lot of young people.

People will stop speeding when the RTA sets respectable speed limits. If you set limits (such as 80/90 on freeways) which are designed for the lowest common denominator (the shitty drivers) you infuriate anyone who can actually drive. Once faced with a ridiculously low speed limit somewhere, they stop respecting all the speed limits.

And its statistically true that if you wait a few years you have less chance of an accident. I think we should just expect accidents to happen - the deaths can easily be justified by the benefits of freedom had by p platers all over the country.

I haven't heard anything like that.

But even it it was raised to 17 it wouldn't affect me... I should get my Ls sometime soon ^^

Theres nothing wrong with speed limits. Hit a track or cop the fine if you want to go faster.

Bullshit. Fairly sure theres a linear correlation between experience and propensity to crash. And don't come back with P plate statistics because they're the most inexperienced group on the road, regardless of their age.
As for the last part of this quote, you're a complete downer. How is the death of one person justifiable for the 'freedom' of others with regards to driving, which is a privilege? I'm all for bumping up speed limits and letting the problem sort itself out, but how does a needless death help anyone when you tack on the effects of crying parents and bleeding hearts?

I am all for driving at a speed appropriate for the conditions. Sometimes that is over the limit, sometimes it is under. If you think you are a good driver, and that is your justification for speeding, you are probably one of the people that I actively avoid on the roads.

Umm statistically if you're older you're less likely to crash? Umm no, its just older people have more experience.

I have a theory that within 15 yrs, there will be a special uni course that you will have to take to get a licence, it will prob just be a topic at uni that you can do as part of any degree tho
