We have windows vista. And my mum says she has everything yeah but shes not letting me have it or anything cos i have my maths extension 1 and economics trial tomorrow and physics the day after. Shes telling me to forget it for now and try get it fixed on tuesday. Is time of the essence here with my problem?

Give this a go. If it doesn't help and it's an OS based virus (sounds like it), turn the PC off and leave it off until you can fix it.

Whats an OS based virus mean and i think im gonna have to turn it off for now cos i really have to study for my 2 exams tomorrow

then open another account on your computer and see if theres internet connection with the browser

Bear in mind that reformatting is a last resort.

You must have an OS CD to reformat (you need to reinstall the operating system [Vista]) and *I don't think the Vista CD's were given to PC owners?
*Meaning you have no operating system to install after the reformat.

You also need the software drivers for your hardware or nothing will work correctly.

OS = Operating system. An OS based virus is entirely dependent on the Operating System (Windows) running for it to work. This is why a boot-time scan (before the OS has started) would benefit you.

I think i will have to reformat it but im turning it off for now and gonna worry about it after my trials.

Formatting isn't that hard. That said, as long as you remember to back up all your important stuff there's no downside to it.

Also try doing a repair. Using the OS install Disc, the OS installation menu should have an option.

What I said before should (if it's the same virus as in the OP). A repair could fix up whatever has screwed his internet connection.

Only downside is, that it takes time to reinstall all your programs, and configure all your personal settings again. Shouldn't take more than a day though, if you motivated enough.

To the OP, is it possible to download AVAST from another computer, then put it on a USB thumb drive, and try and install it on the infected computer?

Nah the computer doesnt recognise anything i put into it so i wouldnt be able to open anything saved onto the usb

Well restart it with the original OS disc you have. Then boot from CD, and go format, new 'custom install', If that doesn't work, you might have to buy a new HDD. OR get an IT technician to have a look at it.

Yes possibly, as the computer may still be able to access your DVD-drive while it is booting. However if the virus is very extreme and has infected your BIOS settings, it may not work. Try it.
