lol at the people who become a doctor for money, if u want money do ur self a favour and aim to be a partner of a firm because doctors dont make shit compared to alot of other professionals in high ranking management positions. though doctors are pimps and do get the hoes.

I beg to differ. If you are in med for the money, you will make the money. 7 figures no sweat.
And you make it sound like being a partner in a firm is easy, its as hard if not harder than becoming a doctor.

Honestly, that's my answer!
I have a GENUINE passion for it! Wanted to become a doctor since I was 5 years old.

Umm, actually, you can do research after post-grad or masters..
I want to be: Oncologist (specialist and surgeon), medical author and cancer researcher

Being a naive 17 year old at the time, I did it for more of an ego thing cuz I had the grades. Honestly, would u do arts if u had 99.95 atar and 100 umat just cos u have an "interest" in it? No, u do something that will put food on the table and a roof over your head. In this case, 10 course meals an mansions. Also, doctors get all the bitches.

It's impossible even as a pre-clinical student to appreciate what medicine actually is. I find it hilarious that people here actually presume to know what reasons "most" people do medicine for or how much you sacrifice even going through med school without being there themselves.

imo, any of these reasons are acceptable for wanting to do med. the only one where you shouldnt go for med is the MY SON/DAUGHTER MUST BE A DOCTOR, where you are forced to do it despite not being interested in it.

you're all idiots

The pay is great. You earn close to 70k out of uni and have 5k+ pay rise each year while in public hospital system and doing your postgrad study (regies earn around 100-140k a year). You start off on a pay thats better than the average australian pay. wtf is wrong with you guys. The pay is gr8. And it only goes up. When you consider that a pretty crap doctor will make more than a very good engineer, lawyer and whatever, you can see why it's a financially secure job. That, and unlike finance, you will always have a job. After postgrad specialisation, you can earn whatever you want, plenty of surgeons with yachts here.

As for people who say shit like saving lives and what not. That's gay. You do med because you like science, but want to be in direct contact with people. And you like the pay, because no matter what you guys say, no one would do the job if all they could earn was 40k a year. No one.

Finally, you have no reason to criticise peoples motivations. If someone does med for a ferrari, that is just as valid as the person who does it for other reasons. The intensity of the desire is all that matters.

That said you are kidding yourself if you think Doctors don't get paid much, especially as the career progresses. Best long term option for salary + secure job possible.

Edit: Would also like to say not everything is great, obviously the hours you have to work are insane especially as a graduate so the hourly pay rate is actually lower than other grad jobs. But that said if you have a genuine drive to do med that shouldn't be a problem.

Precicely my reasons actually, if I end up deciding to do med. I did work experience at a medical research place and found it shit boring, but admittedly I'm still considering science, maybe in a different area.

Its more the fact that it makes you realise how important the career is. It provides motivation because as medicine develops, such deaths can be prevented,and being part.of afield that can possibly bring about such change definitely gives a sense of satisfaction

Its proven that people who study a courses like med,law or engineering only for the money often don't make it. I probably could have got into med but i wasn't really ready to make such a commitment.Maybe grad med if I'm ready.
