Assuming I hit 93's - 94's in Chem, Phys, Eco and 95+ in 4U, 96+ in 3U?

External in the HSC's I mean.

Basically, how well will I have to do in my other subjects to make up for 84-85ish mark in english?

yeah its possible.

You could get say 380/400 aggregate for 8 units then another 70/100 aggregate for English Advanced (which is a low B5 like 84+).

About a 450/500 aggregate would get you a low 90's of say 99.10 or something.

I don't wanna disappoint you but your chances of getting 99+ is like 50% cos your mark for english brings you down.

yeah you'll get 99, provided you do adv eng and get those mentioned marks

Shouldn't you be studying for your yr 10 exams? They're pretty important you know, wouldn't want them to drag down your HSC mark.
Yes lol indeed. What does a year 10 student know more about the hsc than the people who have also been through it. I also assume with great accuracy that statistic is pretty much wrong

You can get a 99 like anomalous said, however you have to do extremely well in your other 8 units which may be hard (I don't know your capabilities) because generally when you look at raw marks for getting like 94 and 95 in a subject, there is a significant jump from raw marks to get 90, and raw marks to get 94 or 95. With extension 2 maths, getting 95+ is pretty much being real close to state ranking, so you would probably need a raw mark of around 80+ in MX2. It is possible nonetheless, and if you do get the marks you mentioned, then your english mark will determine whether you get a low 99 or a high 99.

I know of someone who got a low band 5 for Eng and managed to get high 99s. But that's because he state ranked phys lol.

My family friend Jason Lay got 99.9 despite the fact of getting a mid band 5 in english. But that's because he came first 1st in physics, 8th in MX2 and 10th in MX1. To put that in retrospective, I think it is possible, but you need to perform really well in your other 8 units of study :p

How can you determine a chance with no prior info?

But yeah realistically as I said:

yeah its possible.

The lower your English mark the better you have to do for everything else obviously.

However, getting say 5 lower in English may require you to do better in every other subject by maybe two marks, because gaining aggregate at the top end is much less efficient than trying to gain aggregate from doing terribly in a subject, where there is a lot of room to improve.

Approximately a 95 in everything should get a 99 if you get an 84 in English.

Lol no such statistic does exist. Its pure hear say and such a statistic can never exist because it is all up to the individuals. Unless you individually tallied up all the students who got a B5 in English and 99+ ATAR and then took a percentage of the total amount each year, you can never even remotely come close to such a conclusion.

the method you described seem like a reasonable and appropriate way to verify such statistic but what does he know lol. I assume he pulled that straight out of his ass without giving any reason. I think (making a guess) the number will be more close 5-15% because generally people who get 99+ atars are "well rounded" in all of their subjects.

moving this to the derail thread: who wants to place bets on OP's atar?

I never said this verifies the statistic. I was just proving that such a statistic can never be accurate because individual's differ a lot, and every year there would be a different number of individuals in such a situation.

btw; atar does not come down to chance
This pretty much nails the coffin to my point gg.

There is a lot of factors that go into determining an ATAR. A 99+ ATAR would not be reliant on too much luck.

Now the difference between a 50 ATAR and 60 ATAR would have a bigger factor of reliance on luck (as you could have been lucky to cram the right thing in the day before or whatever for some subjects or something like that). In the top end it gets harder to make the most of luck, as it may only affect you by 0.1 ATAR when you hit the 99s, or maybe 1-2 ATAR for something in the low 90s.

My bad choice of words. What i meant to say is that there is no reliable way of accurately "measuring" the correlation between 99 atar and band 5 in english. but good on the OP for trying. in the hsc you still get marks for trying

99+ means you really know your shit. 50-60 usually means you were bludging throughout the year.
