Howdy!

As most of you know, I’ve planned to do postgraduate medicine at MQU, however, after talking with my parents, we thought - when the time comes - it would be worthwhile for me to apply for medicine at USYD, especially since I have nothing to lose either way. It would be great if I didn’t have to do UCAT or GAMSAT…

I’ve briefly searched through BoS forums to see if there are any answers to my questions, but unfortunately, haven’t found anything.

One of the mandatory pre-requisites is Mathematics Advanced which I achieved a B6 in. Other recommended studies are Biology and Chemistry which are subjects that I’m doing.

As most know, the ATAR requirement is 99.95, including adjustment factors. However, with most USYD early entry courses, B Science & D Medicine, are excluded for adjustment factors.

In this case, what options do I have to obtain adjustment factors? If there are none, does that leave my only option as getting a 99.95 ATAR? 😭

I also had a look at the course on UAC and it’s listed with a Bachelor of Arts. Does this mean that B Arts & D Medicine is another option? Or do I need to study B Arts and B Science as an undergraduate?

Any help is greatly appreciated! I don’t really know my way around finding information from USYD… it’s unfamiliar territory. :(

afaik, u need 99.95 raw to get in, unless if ur from a low socio-economic area in which case its 99.5, this is the same for both the barts and bsci bachelor degree pathways; unfortunately adjustment factors are not considered eg b6 in math

usyd is basically the most competitive med entry in australia for this reason, literally insane requirements

other unis without ucat are unimelb, griffith, james cook afaik, so if ur willing to move then these are options as well, but i dont really know about how competitive ur atar needs to be for entry into these, so u would just have to go to their website and look it up

Out of curiosity, is there a reason why you don't want to do the UCAT? i understand that it is another academic commitment to juggle alongside your hsc subjects but wouldn't it be easier to aim for undergrad UNSW/WSU then it is to aim for USYD or postgrad Med?

I just know my personal capabilities and balancing the UCAT in the same year with HSC would accelerate my anxiety. Obviously, in the long term, health always outweighs what you put in for study. It isn't necessarily easier for everyone, and I guess that postgraduate medicine gives me more time to think about specialisation.

Sorry if I sound stupid or clueless...but what are 'adjustment factors'? 😭

Also, if you are only left with the choice of aiming for a 99.95 ATAR, wouldn't you need alternative plans, as well, in case your aren't able to get into postgraduate Medicine at USYD?

I heard something about an interview after the ATAR in which you would also need to do well...

My friend was planning on doing postgraduate Medicine at MQU...what made you change your mind @AsuTeksu?

adjustment factors = bonus points towards ur atar based on subject performance, eg band6 in math -> 5 bonus atar points. usually competitive degrees like med and law don't count these

yup usyd will still need to interview u, 99.95 is just the cutoff for the interview 😭

its prob good for asuteksu to have backup incase she doesnt get 99.95 (i believe in u though) but she seems like she is fine with doing postgraduate med anyway so

Oh, nothing changed my mind! I've already been accepted into MQU so if I'm presented with the opportunity to go elsewhere - and possibly somewhere better - why not take it?

Adjustment factors are things that universities take into account, such as achieving a Band 6 in a certain subject, and they add ATAR points to your original ATAR. For example, let's say you get 2 ATAR points for a B6 in Mathematics Advanced and your ATAR is 95.00. It will go up to an ATAR of 97.00.

My alternative plan is MQU for postgraduate medicine. Although, I wouldn't have an issue doing any interviews or preparing for them.

Perfectly reasonable, you should always prioritize your health! I just hope you understand that going the post grad route is not a guarantee way to getting into med as you will not only just be competing against people in your own cohort but other cohorts as well. Anyways, good luck!

oh okay makes sense.

Congratulations for getting accepted into MQU! 😃 Did you apply for some early entry thing...I thought early entry took place later? (Sorry for my confusion). Just out of curosity, what process did you undertake to get accepted into MQU before the HSC?

Then you already have an alternative 👍 of course aim for a 99.95 ATAR then.

Thank you :)

Yes, I do understand that postgraduate medicine is not always guaranteed but worst case scenario, if medicine doesn't work out, I already know other pathways that are available that follow on from the undergraduate degrees that I'd like to do :D

Haha, thank you. Don't worry about the confusion, it's okay! It was the MQ Gifted & Talented Program :)

No need to say sorry, we all start somewhere! Adding on what the others have said:
* adjustments do not change your ATAR; they change your selection rank for a particular preference
* your selection rank = your ATAR + adjustments
* you may need to have a minimum ATAR before you are eligible for adjustments to your selection rank.
* as selection rank adjustments are uni and course specific, your selection rank can vary

It is something I've been looking at. I think that at the end of the day, as long as I end up doing anything in science, I'll be happy. One of the other things I was looking at was Veterinary Biology.
this might be unwanted advice but i would do vet bio if i were u, med sci is a trap that so many students fall into bc a) its hard to get a high gpa in a competitive atmosphere that's composed of ppl like u wanting to do postgrad med and b) lack of employment opportunities after studying this degree. that being said if ur interested for the content itself u should totally go for it!

maybe just sci is better then, but in general with basically every science degree u are gonna have to do masters/phd to get most places

There is this thread which might be useful.

For MQU clinical science which is the 2 year undegrad degree to get into MQU med, here are some points to note:
- 155 students students in semester 1 of 2023
- Bachelor of Clinical Science students are eligible to receive a 3% bonus to their weighted grade point average (GPA)
- The GPA, along with a Personal Statement and GAMSAT/MCAT, are used to determine offers for an interview.
- 20 med interview spots reserved for clinical science grads out of 100-120 interviews
- 70 spots in MQU doctor of med (smallest medicine course in Australia)
- MQU med is full fee paying
