    I like Chuck Palahnuik. His prose is great, though he gets a bit gratuitous sometimes. "No matter how much you think you love somebody, you'll step back when the pool of their blood edges up too close."

    Sophie's World is a good run though of Western Philosophy. But if you want to get historical i guess a textbook is the way to go.
