Hey Bored of Studies community

I'm in Year 11 and struggling with my subjects. My scores are: English Standard 7/20, Maths Advanced 17/65, Business Studies 25/30, CAFS 11/33, and Chemistry 33%. Arabic Contineours 70 %

I study 4 hours a day, but I'm still not improving. I love Maths and Business Studies but find CAFS , Chemistry and english tough. Any tips or resources to help me improve would be greatly appreciated.

Do I have any realistic hope of getting an ATAR of 70?

Thanks!

Hi, not sure I can be of much help but i’ll try. The first thing I thought seeing you said you study for 4 hours a day and still don’t see any improvement is that maybe your studying methods aren’t very effective? With 4 hours a day you should at least be seeing SOME improvement? Have you tried trialling different study methods? I think that would help you determine whats working and what is making no difference. (I would give you some methods but I don’t really have any myself for english and i don’t do chemistry). Just do some research on the best study methods for the subjects you study with and see if helps at all. I apologise if you’ve already tried this lol.

It would help to know your schools rank/how many band 6s a year but I think 70 is definitely achievable (just because 70 is the average atar and you appear within the top 50% in most of your subjects).

I do chem and maths adv like you and barely passed because I didn't do practice papers and only did workbook questions. I think doing past papers from thsc, your teachers or tutors give can definitely help more for these subjects as it shows what questions are typically asked and the style of them. For chem ,cuz it's mod 2 and nearly 3 now I think knowing the formulas for calculations and the reasoning behind certain things can help. English is hard unless if you have someone reading and giving feedback on your writings so I guess try doing that?

yes, you can 100% improve dude trust
i got like 40 % for both sor2 and bio in prelims and now doubled those marks basically (my other subejcts werent great either, eng was like 9/10- now its 15/20)
how are you studying?? i really struggled with english tbh but doing practice papers, writing paragraphs and expanding on the ideas and concepts learnt in class always helped me a ton!!!! don't just use the analysis youve found in class - do your own research and MAKE SURE TO WRITE AT LEAST 2 ESSAYS BEFORE ANY ENGLISH EXAM - one thats fully chunked out with all your ideas relating to whatever youre given, and at least one in timed conditions

if you have access to atomi, id really recommend getting it - it includes fantastic vids (from what ive heard) for chem
and great ones for math too (at least standard, but im sure it would be good for advanced too!!)

you've got this man, i know you can get at least a 70 atar dont give up

I def think 70 atar is more than achievable also I think more hours of work, with stricter planning of what is done in each is good too. Have you tried tutoring also? Flashcards like quizlett are also the best memory recall work to try! Hope this helps

ohh no bro you cant just memorise it
you have to make sure you understand whats youre learning and be able to apply that knowledge
its impossible to remember everything, and i really wouldnt recommend doing that tbh

especially for math + chem, you can't really just memorise everything and do your best, you more need to know the concepts and how to apply them to any given scenario since thats what you'll be asked on the exam. dont get me wrong you should know all the facts but it's useless to just memorise them, because then on the exam you won't know what to do.

for english, i'd advise you to write essays/creatives more frequently and ask your teachers. for me i'd always ask my teacher for feedback and it helped a lot, usually they are more than happy to help if you're putting in the effort of independently writing essays, and it helps you improve a lot when you understand what the english teachers at your school are expecting of you. also try to ramp up your writing speed, that just comes from writing a lot of essays, you'll start to develop a vocabulary of common ways to express things like topic sentences, you don't want to be sitting there for 10 minutes thinking up of a topic sentence (that's what i used to do)

It is totally achievable! You still have the rest of year 11 to work on yourself and develop good study techniques! Also, your marks and ranks don’t contribute to the HSC until year 12!
In terms of how to improve, maybe work on the feedback the teachers have given you and see what areas need the most improvement. Perhaps, your current study methods aren’t working for you! Year 11 is the time to experiment a little and there is room for improvement and finding the best way to do things. In terms of English, I agree with another responder in saying responses and feedback, but also rereading texts and having someone to go through them more in-depth with you and help you practice your writing!
I also noticed you found CAFS difficult. I got a 94 (band 6) last year and I am more than happy to help you if you have any questions or want someone to look over your responses! In addition, when year12 comes around feel free to contact me and I’ll dig up my notes and acronyms! Once you learn how to answer questions properly and find a way to connect everything in CAFS it becomes a lot easier!
I wish you the best. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you feel you need help! Good luck!!
