Hi,

I am currently studying HSC French Extension, and since the course modified every five years, we are currently in the first year of the new course prescriptions. This means there are very few practice questions available. If anybody had any practice questions for the 2025-2030 French Extension course or knew where I could get some, especially Reading Part A (short answer questions based on the 10 songs), that would be very much appreciated.

While I am not familiar with the changes to the French Extension course (having taken it in 2019), I am a native speaker and would be happy to write some general questions for you if you can specify the kind of topics that they should cover, as well as the type of questions. Hopefully this will be helpful to you. :)

Thanks for the help @jimmysmith560 . The course studies 10 songs, but questions are often similar between songs (with variation depending on content and techniques explored in the song). These songs are:

TextTitle
Text 1‘La fille’ by Louane (2022)
Text 2Carmen’ by Stromae (2013)
Text 3Pour la vie’ by Patrick Bruel (1999)
Text 4Santé’ by Stromae (2022)
Text 5Les Restos du Coeur’ by Jean Jacques Goldman (1985)
Text 6Le bon côté de la charité’ by Michèle Bernard (1982)
Text 7Lève-toi' by Barbara Pravi (2023)
Text 8Ma France à moi’ by Diam’s (2006)
Text 9Né en 17 à Leidenstadt’ by Jean Jacques Goldman, Michael Jones, Carole Fredericks (1990)
Text 10J’y suis j’y reste’ by Zebda (2002)

There are a few main question types:
  • The three key themes are connectedness, empathy and cultural diversity, of which some questions refer to (e.g. How does Song X explore the theme of empathy? Explain how Song Y and Song Z differ in their messages regarding connectedness?).
  • A line is given, with the question asking for an analysis of the line (e.g. On est bleu de lui, seulement pour 48 heures. Explain the significance of this line)
  • A literary technique (e.g. Explain the use of repetition in this song. Explain how the use of personal pronouns promotes solidarity.)
  • A musical technique (e.g. Explain how the voices in the chorus are effective at conveying the message of Les Restos du Coeur. Explain how the composer conveys their attitude in the song. Refer to rhythm and melody.)
There are also comparison questions between songs (e.g. Compare the commentary of women in society between Song X and Song Y. How is friendship portrayed in society in Song X versus Song Y?)

Thanks a lot for your help
