Hey guys, I’m currently in year 11 doing English Ext 1 and I’m wondering if I should keep it or switch it out for a 2 unit.

Although English is one of my strongest subjects, it’s not something I’m very passionate in. I find it my current English Ext class extremely boring and I’m already a little behind both the class work and the novel we are meant to be reading.

However what’s stopping me from switching it out is that I’m worried about whether I can still achieve a very high atar without any extension subjects ( I’m not doing math ext either ) because I see all of the high achievers from my school have done at least one extension subject.

I would trial it out for year 11 but because my school only lets us do a maximum of 12 units, I ended up doing 5 2-unit subjects, English ext and a 1-unit filler subject that I must drop in year 12.
What concerns me is that because I’ll only have 11 units, I won’t be able to drop any of my 2 unit subjects.

So if I did 6 2-unit subjects now I could just trial which ones I’m good at in year 11 and drop my worst one in year 12 which would be a whole lot safer.

Please help……
Any advice would be appreciated💞

eng ext is a lot of writing and reading  obviously lol but if you dont enjoy a lot of it, you might start hating it quick. i think ext was pretty boring for me at the start but i also generally like reading/writing so i enjoy it a lot now !! but if you're not super passionate about it or anything, id switch it out or it'll kind of just impede on your other subjects or make you hate english even more 😭

in saying that, im sure you had some sort of interest in the subject if you were willing to pick it, even if one of the factors was just cause you're pretty good at it, so if you'd rather just stick it out for yr 11 and then drop it after prelims, thats fine too. im on 11 units rn, but i made that choice being confident in my other subjects. i think you just have to be sure you enjoy and/or can do well in all your other 2 unit subjects you currently have, and if not, be willing to try harder to do so

about ur atar, im pretty sure its fine, people from my school got above 90 without any extension subjects. they scale well but they're arent the deciding factor for a high atar
