yeah i think fail is an overstatement but im sure some of them still had like low results by their own standardsThat's because almost everyone with a 99+ is consistently good. You won't find many 99+ who fail assessments.
If it helps you, I did not do very well for my first 2 assessments in geography but aced my trials by a considerable margin over 2nd which allowed me to jump from ~4th to 1st. Marks don't matter in school its ranking. Keep the ranking as consistently high as possible and you'll be in control of your own marks (most of the time)i feel like i was made to think that everyone that got above a 99 atar got as close to 100% on every exam as possible. going into y12 that kind of crushed my confidence a bit bc in tops schools especially 100%s are rare and rank 1 in a subject like physics has like a 90% average if that even
