You missed the part to where they scale your final HSC marks to a mark out of 50 by UAC. It is the UAC mark/50 that gets added up /500 and then they go down from highest to lowest and assign ATARS :) For example, a 90 in Ext Math: 44.7/50 90 in Bio: 40.8/50 90 in Automotive: 34.4/50
