The cut-offs for each course change every year so there might still be a chance you will be able to get into Applied Science. You should try digging up the cut-offs for the last 5 years or so (you can usually find this on UAC or USyd website). I've seen some course cut-offs fluctuate up to 7...
Adelaide is certainly NOT a hole. Although no where near as populated as Sydney I don't think you will have a difficult time finding things to do each weekend.
I've heard that some unis only give you an interview for your first preference so that may be the reason why you haven't received a medicine interview.
I totally agree with you about being over movie dates *yawn*. One of the best dates I've had was bike riding around the Yarra River, and then a picnic in Botanical Gardens.
