Yes, I dont think they are nessesary in lectures, in fact I only saw a handfull of students have them in lectures the whole 3 years I was there. Its fine to get one for home use or to take to the library, but its quite rare you see on in a lecture.

Not sure about Hawksbury, but when I was at Blacktown they have a few power outlets along the back wall of the big lecture theatre.
