Thanks for your quick replies. I have the mathematical association of nsw book. What I still don’t get is the brackets part, what does the top expression have to do with the bottom one of each bracket, is it similar to the one from question 5 b of that paper where

I was doing the 97 extention 1 paper yesterday and had trouble with question 7 b, both I and ii. I have looked at the answers in the back of the book; I don’t know really what it is, or how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, the question is shown below. (sorry for the large pic)
