That's the idea of a universal motor. The split-ring reverses the current direction (so keeps the current in the rotor coil constant in direction) but the magnetic field reverses direction due to the AC (instead of the current changing direction of a normal DC motor) to keep the torque constant...

I was looking for a related for my advanced module C and found a pretty good one but it's on the extension 1 prescribed text list (of course, the one thing I pick). Is that allowed or should I look for something else instead to be safe?
